In a fresh attempt to resolve an enduring electricity crisis, President Mahama created a new ministry for power on Saturday to speed up economic growth and minimize power cuts.
According to a statement from the presidency, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, the chairman of parliament's energy committee, will head the new ministry.
But a ranking member on parliaments select committee on Energy, Hon. K.T. Hammond has kicked against the creation of the ministry arguing that it wouldnt be the remedy to the numerous trails facing our power sector.
Although he didnt challenge the competence of Dr. Donkor, Mr. Hammond stated in an interview with Radio Ghana that to solve the power issue, more focus has to be on Volta River Authority (VRA) instead of the newly created ministry. His only worry was that Dr. Donkor could afford to do less if things remain as it is now with institution such as the VRA, GRIDCO and ECG.
