The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said that the government in 2018 would ensure that every Ghanaian has a bank account.
The rationale, he said, is part of measures to ensure a digitised economy in the country.
He said over 70 per cent of the Ghanaian population do not have bank accounts, hence the government's decision to have every Ghanaian own one.
Dr Bawumia was speaking at the official opening of the 2017 Innovation Week organised by the Kofi Annan-India Centre of Excellence in Accra.

PLEASE STOP INSULTING THE VEEP BCOS I DON'T IT IS BAD IDEA TO OWN BANK A/C. ITS RATHER HELPS THE GROWTH OF EVERY ECONOMY.
Dr Bawumia is the unofficial spokesperson for the bank of Ghana. The idea is good but how will it cause the banks to reduce interest rates. Reducing interest rates will naturally draw people to the banks. The banks want our money to loan out at such high rates and declare huge profits and fat bonuses whiles customers cry. Reduce the BOG policy rate if you want the economy to expand.
Nkwa seas3m; are you going to deposit money into each and everyone's account or you are going to whip everyone with a cord to open an account ? This present gov't is sick- really sick to the point of hallucinating. I have never witnessed a confused gov't like this before; scrambling and tossing over every use - less idea that readily comes to mind. From problems ridden free SHS to unfulfilled restoration of teachers and nurses trainees allowances to corrupt Ghana Post GPS to BOST scandal to US$20,000 gate fees at the Flagstaff House to Ghc177 million unexplained expenses on the Euro Bond. The list is endless. Now, it is bank account for everybody. Bawu, come and open the accounts for all of us. Kwa sea toh*
Now i know Bawumia is just talking. Enough of the promises ooooohhhh. Get to work. We don tire.
I admire you, Dr Bawumia, and what this current government is trying to do but I think you are taking this digitization of the Ghanaian economy too far, haba! Is it now by force to own a bank account?
Eiiiii, is it by force!! Even in America an UK not everyone has one.
