Highway robbers on the Atebubu-Kwame Danso road in the Brong-Ahafo Region Monday night allegedly attacked and killed a prison officer and injured another, Sergeant Paul Gyan, who is currently on admission at a health facility receiving treatment.
Assistance Prison Officer Nana Antwi was reportedly shot and killed when the suspected highway robbers crossed their vehicle at Akokoa on the highway.
The two officers were said to be in the company of three civilians on board a Nissan Patrol with registration number, GM 9876-16, and were returning from Kwame Danso to Accra when the incident happened.
According to a police source, the prison officers were stationed at the national headquarters in Accra but had gone for a programme at the Sene East District and when they were returning to Accra, the vehicle was ambushed by the robbers and opened fire on the occupants, killing Assistance Prison Officer Nana Antwi.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE via telephone, district police commander of Atebubu, Superintendent Joseph Atsu Dzinaku, said no suspect had yet been arrested, but promised his outfit would close in on them because traces of items used in the attack had been identified.
