A deputy Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering the cancellation of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) which promotes Junior High School (JHS) students to Senior High Schools in the country.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah disclosed this on Abusua FM’s 'Abusua NKomo' show hosted by Kwame Adinkra during his tour in the Ashanti Region.
According to the Deputy Minister and Member of Parliament of Ofoase Ayirebi Constituency, government's intention is to make the basic education system automatic for JHS students.
He said government is considering plans to in the future cancel Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) that enable pupils in the basic schools gain admission into Senior High Schools (SHS).
He indicated that government’s motive behind the decision is to get every Ghanaian school going child enrolled in Senior High School education.
The decision when implemented will see no Ghanaian child denied access to the free SHS education promised by the NPP government and which takes effect in September.
He added that the plan will see all JHS students being assessed by their performance in class which will see the brilliant ones promoted to SHS and those with poor performance being repeated till they put up good performance.

Simple Proposal Bring back GCE O level. Schooling can end there.
I also support the idea but my wish is, if the government can first educate the public including the opposition parties to understand that this what is good for the country and he intend to do, get the whole entire nation to support why not. On the other hand because it's a political policy any other government which doesn't agree with NPP can change it again. Example is the four years , three years PIN PONG game NPP / NDC have been doing to this weak Senior high system.
That's how they do it in UK and other developed countries.
NPP is getting it wrong here. the quality of student is paramount and therefore should not cancel the Exams. The students will be lazy and poor if the exams is cancel.
It would be the worse thing that has happened to this country. Even the thought of it is fuullish. We must rather strengthen the BECE exams. If it becomes automatic the entire educational system will be too diluted. Quality will drop like never before. The kids will not be challenged to learn. Paa Kwesi nduom has been on the payroll of our enemies for a long time, he is preaching what the white tives have asked him to say, Fork him!
NDC supporters here are very worried because they know that if people come out of SHS, they will be immune to the stuuuuuuuupppidity of NDC policies and programs. DO IT!!! SCRAP BECE so that as many people can go through the SHS level.
For this vision if it comes on I bet you I am for NPP.
What is this419 government doing? This is a subtle way to deny a lot of pupils from the so called free shs because they know they can't hold the free shs for even two years so the only way to sustain it is to deny a lot of pupils by repeated. When pupils ate repeated it means the parents would keep bearing the cost of their education at the jhs level. No one forced you to implement shs, so don't come and use dubious means to deny our children from going to shs in the name of repeating them for poor performance.
This does not make sense. There can be no automatic promotion in any educational system. class assessment only is not enough rather it must compliment the final examination. Rather the various branch of education must be strengthened teaches trained very well and motivated and the country must have an aim which our educational system will feed into. NPP should be careful with populist ideas which will destroy our educational system
