The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is restructuring its College of Distance Education (CoDE) to mount more post graduate programmes, Professor Isaac Galyuon, the Provost of CoDE, has said.

In view of this, an implementing committee is due to be inaugurated to ensure that the College run as many post-graduate programmes as possible through distance to make that level of education accessible to those who need it, he said.

He said the restructuring hinged on the University's desire to give opportunity to employees of public and private sectors to conduct research, acquire more knowledge, skills and expertise to develop themselves and enhance their work.

Prof. Galyuon made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the side-lines of a dinner organised by CoDE for its graduating post-graduate students on Friday.

He said the University believed that distance education could offer a lot of people the opportunity to acquire knowledge without leaving their jobs.

He encouraged the working class to take advantage of it as it was convenient and suitable.

Prof. Galyuon said the future for distance education was bright but required more support and encouragement for more workers to enroll.

He gave the assurance that quality would not be compromised on the distance mode because UCC wished to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge that would enable them to move the nation’s economy forward.

Prof Galyuon said the importance of post-graduate education to national development could not be overemphasised and called on stakeholders, including government, private sector organisations and individuals to support with chairs, scholarships and bursaries.

“If money is devoted to research work and post graduate education, this country will develop faster than we are seeing now,” he added.

Some of the graduands spoke about the convenience of distance education and encouraged their colleague workers to take advantage to add value to themselves.
