The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has tasked the Police administration to set up a unit that would monitor the activities of Police personnel who may be assigned to carry out the “the spot fine” project when it is implemented.

In an interview with Citi News, the Executive Director of the (GII), Vitus Azeem stated that in order to eliminate corruption, a system must be put in place to ensure that offending drivers pay their fines at banks instead of paying to Police officers.

“The amount of money involved has to be such that they will not be any motivation for one to want to pay it to the police officer,” he stated.

He suggested that the banks should be easily accessible in other not to discourage the drivers from paying.

Mr. Azeem also mentioned that actions should be taken against drivers who do not pay their spot fines within a time frame.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police introduced a spot fine system for minor traffic offences.

The system, which will begin in May, will cover offences such as failure to renew driving license, driving on the shoulders of the road, failure to use seat belt, the use of communication device, among similar offences.
