Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood has called for “Day of Anger” protests following Friday prayers, outraged at the death toll following the army’s actions against it and its supporters.

It hopes for millions in the streets nationwide, and if people answer the call it would represent another escalation in a crisis that shows no signs of receding.

The army has said it will fire on anyone threatening the country’s institutions or police during its proclaimed state of emergency, and a curfew already covers nighttime. But the day is another matter, and with at least 623 deaths and thousands of injured already if the army is challenged again, it says it will not hesitate to strike.

The National Salvation Front, a diverse coalition of liberals and leftists has also called for a counter-demonstration against the Brotherhood today, further raising the possibility of confrontation in a country that is looking increasingly divided and volatile.
