The National Petroleum Authority [NPA], last Saturday increased fuel prices by 9% with effect from Sunday, May 17, 2015.
Petrol will now be sold at GHc3.33 per litre while Diesel will be sold at GHc3.24 per litre. A kilogram of LPG is expected to be sold at GHc2.88, MGO Local will go up GHc2.96. Unified petroleum is expected to go up by 4% while Kerosene will be up by 9%. However, prices of premix fuel and RFO remain the same.
Moses Asaga, Chief Executive of the NPA in an interview with Peace FM on "Kokrokoo" programme justified the shoot-up saying the fuel increment was to avoid a fuel shortage.
However, a pressure group, Chamber of Petroleum Consumers has asked President John Mahama to sack the NPA boss for the increment.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, the General Secretary of group, Duncan Amoah explain that the increase in petroleum products which could be avoidable will worsen the already ailing economy.
To him, Asaga’s position can be occupied by a layman with no experience.
“...There is a common phenomenon called hedging in world market pricing. These are critical issues we think the NPA is either not dealing with or not interested in and for which the lazy approach of passing on to the consumer is being adopted, and for which we think for that job, a Makola person can do that,” he said.
