The previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government left behind GHC1.2 billion debt at the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), says President Nana AddoDankwaAkufo-Addo.
The President, however, disclosed that his government through the Ministry of Health has paid GHC560 million of the debt and was working tirelessly to settle all to revive the Scheme.
He was speaking at the launching of the restoration of the nurses and midwives trainee allowances on Tuesday in Sunyani.
The previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government scrapped the allowance in 2014, under which nursing trainees got at least GH¢450.00 every quarter.
But, during the 2016 electioneering period, President Nana Addo DankwaAkufo-Addo promised to restore the allowance for the trainees to go through a smooth training to serve the nation.
With the reinstatement, about 58,000 trainee nurses and midwives are expected to receive GHC400 allowance.
President Akufo-Addo stressed the government’s determination to resuscitate the NHIS, implement good and pragmatic policies and build the country beyond aid.
“We believed, and still believe, that Ghana needs all the nurses and healthcare workers she can get, if the nation is to have a solid, world-class healthcare system, and we think it necessary to provide the relevant incentives to make that possible”, he said.
The President told the joyous trainee nurses who had gathered at the Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College that “the pledge was not mere political rhetoric and campaign talk, neither was it to deceive nursing trainees in order to get their votes. It was much more than that”.

LOL NANA ADDO IS INTERESTING, ONE TIME YOU SAY THE MONEY IS HERE ,THEN ANOTHER TIME YOU SAY DEBT , BUT YOU GOT MONEY TO TAKE OVER 190 PEOPLE TO AMERICA, MR PRESIDENT ,YOU CALLED SOMEONE INCOMPETENT,AS FOR YOU, YOU WILL CRY. THE WAY YOU WILL BE DISGRACED BEFORE LEAVING OFFICE, GOD IS WATCHING YOU
The president should as well tell the people of Ghana what the number of subscribers was in 2008 and at the end of 2016. Certainly, if the number of subscribers keep increasing on daily basis without a corresponding increase in funding sources, certainly there will be a funding gap unless as a president u want to ignore other sectors of the economy and concentrate on others. You have just assumed the reign of govt, wait till when u are leaving office one day u do so without any debt anywhere before u can brag.
NANA ADDO SHOULD TELL GHANAIANS WHICH GOVT IN GHANA'S HISTORY HAS EVER COME TO MEET MONEY STUCK IN BANKS ACCOUNTS TO START USING. ENOUGH OF THIS THRUSH. IN 2009, ATTA MILLS CAME TO MEET A 14% BUDGET DEFICIT FROM NPP BUT HE AND HIS APPOINTEES DIDN'T USE ONE FULL YEAR TO COMPLAIN. YOU ARE NOT THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF GHANA. GET SETTLE FOR WORK AND SPARE OUR EARS WITH THIS ***barred word*** ON DAILY BASIS.
ENOUGH of the complaining. If you decide to be PRESIDENT from that moment on you carry the cross. Just like marriage. Folks are tired of those sig along hymns. Presidency is not by force. Hence no president should disturb public peace with that SLOGAN. Presidency is not by FORCE. Americans hardly do you hear democrats constantly stating how messy Republicans are messing things up. They waiting to unseat them. To the media lies don't SELL sometimes.
Every government inherits assets and liabilities. Stop the complain and get to work.
