The iconic Ashanti queen mother, Yaa Asantewaa has been featured by BBC News Africa as part of their initiative to celebrate African women who made remarkable contributions and deserve praise on the continent.

Yaa Asantewaa is the first of 8 women whose stories will be shared by BBC to the world for their worthy roles on the continent.

The two-minute video produced about Yaa Asantewaa details her background and the impact she made during her reign as Queen.

It tells the story of how Yaa Asantewaa came to be known as a ‘Warrior Queen’ and how she led her kingdom to war against the British in defence of their cultural identity.

Other women to be featured on by BBC News Africa include the Egyptian Woman who started the Egypt Feminist Union and campaigned against child marriage, Queen Amina; a Hausa warrior queen of Zazzau; and the Dahomey Mothers, an all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey in present-day Benin.

“This BBC Africa series has been produced using historical and iconographic research but includes artistic interpretation” a story on BBC website captured.
