A project to dredge the Volta Lake from Akuse in the Eastern Region to the estuary at Ada in the Greater Region is to begin soon.

Two Ghanaian firms are to undertake the project in two slots, from Akuse to Sogakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, and to the estuary at Ada.

Mr Lois Agamah, South Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE), announced this at a Town Hall Meeting by the Assembly.

A source close to one of the firms told the GNA that the contracts for the work would be signed this month.

The DCE said the dredging would bring relief to residents along the Lake, fishermen and traders who use it as means of transport.

He said the several millions of metric tons of sand to be removed from the Lake would be used for infrastructural development and the weeds turned into fertilizer for farming.

The DCE called for support from the locals and urged the youth to take advantage of job opportunities during the project.

Mr Agama said the Assembly was currently undertaking over 40 projects, some already completed in the areas of educational, health and water, including those left unfinished by the past administration.

He said a 10-unit water closet toilet facility was being done at Fieve, two others at Dabala Technical Institute and four at Agbakope.

The DCE said about 300 street lights were ready to be fixed in communities in the area to ward off miscreants.

Mr Agama also said the Assembly would soon send demand notices on property rate payments as part of a scheme to rake in revenue for development.

Participants, including chiefs, lauded the Assembly and called for enforcement of driving rules and security in the District.
