There have been some concerns raised about the alleged 21 member delegation of the Vice President to the 2017 UNCTAD in Geneva. However, government sources indicate that in line with protocol arrangements for the office of the Vice President the actual 16 member delegation was not out of place.

The number rather falls in line with the conventional arrangements and even less than previous regimes.

A statement released and intercepted by PEACEFMONLINE.COM indicated that the attention of government has been drawn to a list of participants for the 2017 UNCTAD conference held in Geneva. The government appreciates the concerns raised over the size of Ghana’s entourage.

However, the following is the background and the facts:

The Vice-President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, attended the meeting as the only one in his capacity invited by UNCTAD as the guest of honour. The other countries did not have their Vice Presidents or heads of states invited as the special guest of hounour and therefore did not attend. The delegation from Ghana thus could be higher than all other countries because of the special security details and other members who are mandated by standard protocol to travel with the Vice President.

He was accompanied by an entourage of 16 comprising official delegates/participants and, as is standard protocol practice for any Vice-President, by ancillary or support staff. These include security detail, media, administrative and a protocol officer.

The ancillary members of the entourage were not delegates or participants at the meeting and, admittedly, ought not have been listed as such.

Three of the listed participants did not travel with Dr. Bawumia because they are officers of the Ghana Embassy in Switzerland and resident in Geneva who joined the meeting.

Additionally, two others, Dr. Gideon Boako (Economic Advisor/Spokesperson) and Prof. Joe Amoako-Tuffour (Secretary to the Economic Management Team), who were in Switzerland on a separate two-week assignment at the Quantum Global Research Lab in Zurich, joined the team for the UNCTAD meeting.

Other countries did not participate at the Vice Presidential level because they were not invited to do so and therefore had smaller delegations. In addition, they did not include their support or ancillary staff where they had any.

Government is fully conscious of and alert to the justified demands of citizens to maintain reasonable administrative costs.

Name: On the Renewable energy front, we must go hard and the fair should see to concrete action being rolled out robustly.
The 10% contribution of renewables to our energy mix by 2030 is not ambitious enough. Indeed, it is woefully inadequate and chips at our attempts to ensure energy sufficiency and security, environmental sustainability and economic development and growth. We must push hard to make renewables about 25-30% of the energy mix by 2030. That should be our goal to solidly anchor the economic fundamentals to withstand shocks and stress. Thankfully, on the solar energy front, we have a PV manufacturing facility in the FZ enclave which must be encouraged to ramp up production in other to meet this objective fully.

Responsible journalists do double checking and offer opportunities to respective officials for explanations before filing reports. Filed reports usually include such explanatons to give a balanced reportage. Only unprofessional ones do otherwise. The report on the vice president delegation was for a mischevious purpose.

Nana Addo Dankwah and Minister for Roads what is happening? We all know there is no money for major construction works but we can at least patch the existing roads with coal tier. We should not wait for port holes to develop into man-holes. The Ashaley Botwe Road is so bad that Commuters spend hours daily to get to work. The contractor who is working on the gutters has left sand on the shoulders of the road narrowing the road and forcing commuters onto the middle of the road. The portholes on that stretch of road can be covered for the time been to make life easy for commuters. Minister of Road and his Engineers should go to construction sits during rush hours to see what is happening. The under tunnel at Legon needs urgent attention. There is still traffic on that road. Why can’t we open the old tunnel also for drivers to use or build other tunnel in addition. Road Minister woke up and do something different from NDC abaa. Politicians can all not be the same?

@Kwabena, in your dream. The vice president has no credibility left. The explanation put out there is a none starter. This government seems to have so soon forgotten why it was voted in power. The earlier they change their ways, the better.

Some journalists and reporters remain ***barred word*** of certain international convention practices. In their haste to cause mischief, they display their limited knowledge on such matters. I suggest that in future they ask for explanations rather than make hair-raising reports which exposes their biasedness. This continued agenda of mudslinging the vice president is not getting anywhere. Dr Bawumiah has his intergrity intact and unimpaired.

Bogus explanation. One person travelling and he has 16 member delegation accompanying him in the name of security detail, media, administrative and a protocol officer. Why Ghana?
