Vehicle and Asset Dealers Association of Ghana (VADAG) will on February 19, 2019, embark on a car demonstration to register their displeasure over various tax and levies in their business.
The Luxury Vehicle Levy (LVL) was imposed on vehicle owners and importers last year.
According to the Luxury Vehicle Act, 2018 (Act 969), a vehicle with engine capacity ranging from 2.9L to 3.0L was charged GHc1,000; capacities ranging from 3.5L to 4.0L were also charged GHc1,500, while vehicles with engine capacity of 4.5L and above were levied GHc2000.
However, the car dealers claim, this levy is bad and should be withdrawn.
The car protest which seems to be first in the country will start from the Obra Spot to the Jubilee House.
According to Eric Boateng, President of VADAG, from the Obra Spot, they will go to the Ministry of Finance and "then we will park our cars and go with our keys and end at the Jubilee House; where we will also park the rest of the cars and then return to the Obra Spot".
"Enough is enough; maybe Ken Ofori-Atta is waiting for us to demonstrate before he will listen. Ghanaians now call the levy 'Ofori-Atta levy' and so when they come to your garage and see the capacity of the car, they don't purchase it . . .the taxes are affecting our business," Mr. Boateng added while speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Thursday.
Speaking to this issue on the same platform, Kweku Kwarteng, Deputy Finance Minister said even though the taxes might be of an inconvenience to people, it is for the good of the country.
"We needed money to develop the country; help in the implementation of projects. We have received a lot of feedback and we are working around it. We are studying the implementation for some time and afterward, we will find out the pros and cons," he said on Peace FM.

hmmmm, what kind of development, what about the huge loan borrowed for the past two years, what development showed from that money ,now car taxes will rather developed the country? oh Ghana when when .hmmmm
To those who want to bring heaven down, please seize fire and lets reason. Why don't those car dealers stop importing those cars with big engines. In The UK I understand that: road tax is determined by the engine size and the age; Insurance is also determined by the engine size, the number of years you've been driving without accident; even driving into the city you have to pay a daily charge. how many people in the business community or the self employed (fitters, welders, electricians etc) pay taxes? We talk too much. Now that we can a way to steal and dupe the ordinary citizen we are complaining.
I AM NPP SYMPATHIZER BUT THIS TAX ISNUISANCE.AFTER ALL THE HIGH DUTIES PAID THEY SHOULD PAY ANOTHER TAX. AABA,MASA COME AGAIN, YOU ARE WRONG ON THIS
The NPP must listen oooo. This is purely a nuisance tax. If indeed they need money to develop Ghana as Kwaku Kwarteng said, then they should stop living extravagant lifestyles as MPs. If they forfeit their exgratia Ghana will get more money for development Akufo-Addo Addo must listen oooo yoooo
If you are sitting on gold, diamond, timber ,manganese, donkey horses and you still need special Levi to develop Ghana then you're human Said by trump . I have sparked mine waiting patiently for 2020
I want to tell the Finance Minister in this case that they have flop. So much is being paid at the harbor for the same purpose, so why bringing this KILLING tax again. For those whose dont have muck knowledge about car duties, just go to any Garage and ask them to show u an example. My brother, u can see that too much is being paid. I would like to know if an articulator Truck is also a LUXURY TRUCK. Now it is anything above 3.0, being cars or trucks, no one cares. Please let save Ghana, this is not a matter of politics. This Govt must go too is being taken away from the population. tks
K K I share your line of thought on this one. I have voted for the NPP all the time even though I dont get or expect anything in return just for the fun of it, but this time I am seriously considering changing my pattern because of this LUXURY TAX
Why not use this opportunity to overthrow this F democracy?
Kojo Appia, Eric and the like minded should go back to school and learn some basic reasoning. Who told you those who bring in vehicles with big engine don't pay tax. They pay duties as high as twice the price of the car. Not every big engine car is luxurious. Take for instance a Ford van being used for chop bar business attracting 2000 cedis roadworthy fee annually. Even trucks are being levied. How is that possible
@Alex, you can spend over $20000 on car but you can't afford $250 as taxes on the annually on the car ironically. You are complaining about pot holes on the roles apparently and how do you think the government can fix them without taxes. I have said it over times, Ghanaians want freebies but hate the mention of taxes. In many part of the world these taxes are paid. Ask people who luxury and big engine cars in the UK especially and they will tell you.
