Seasoned journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has called on the Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to intervene in a chaos brewing at the University of Winneba (UEW).
Students of the University have expressed agitation over the dismissal of the local President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku and Professor Ephraim Avea Nsoh, Principal of the College of Languages Education by the school authorities.
It is reported that the two people were relieved of their duties by the University Vice Chancellor, Reverend Father Prof Anthony Afful-Broni a few days ago.
According to the dismissal letter addressed to Dr. Duku, the disciplinary board set up by the Vice Chancellor resorted to this action because the victims "did not exhaust the internal structures of the University for settling dispute before proceeding to court. You used the institutional time to go to court without seeking official permission. Without any cause, you initiated legal action against the University – your employer".
Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme to host Kwami Sefa Kayi, Kwesi Pratt called for the Education Minister to step into the situation to restore calm and find lasting solutions to the issues going on at the University.
He also cautioned the authorities of the University not to destroy the school because Winneba is a landmark in the history of Ghana.
“Don’t destroy Winneba. Don’t use unnecessary fight that ‘I’m the Champion’ . . . to destroy Winneba. What’s happening at Winneba, especially the University, worries me a lot,” he said.
