Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his Guinean counterpart, Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, yesterday discussed how to join hands in the bauxite sector to benefit mutually.

The two countries are blessed with the world’s largest deposits of the resource.

The bilateral arrangement, which the Vice President said would be akin to the recent partnership between Ivory Coast and Ghana on cocoa, would be to the advantage of the two countries.

Dr Bawumia disclosed this to the media after a meeting with his Guinean counterpart on the sidelines of the just concluded Export-Import (EXIM) Bank conclave in New Delhi.

He added that with Guinea having the largest deposit of the resource in the world and Ghana blessed with close to a billion metric tonnes of the resource, the two are set to control 70-80 per cent of the world’s bauxite resources.

The two countries can take mutually beneficial decisions if they work in tandem.

The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation, which was established by an Act of Parliament, is in its formative stage and further details are due for announcement in the not-too-distant future, DAILY GUIDE has learnt.

Ghana could be earning an export value of $350 billion from refined bauxite, something the President and his Vice are keen in realizing.

At the end of the conclave yesterday, the Vice President joined Ibrahima Kassory Fofana and the Deputy Prime Minister of Lesotho to pay a courtesy call on the Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.

The African leaders discussed partnership between India and Africa.
