A suspected armed robber has been gunned down by the police in the Akatsi South District after a gun battle with the police at Kotomensakope Junction, near Akatsi in the Volta Region.
According to the Akatsi Police Commander, Supt. Mr Bismark Agyapong, the deceased, who is yet to be identified, was part of a gang that was on operation in the area last Monday dawn, hiding in the bushes and attacking unsuspecting commuters.
Upon a tip-off, the police rushed to the area and managed to arrest Eji Ogu Chijioke, 23, while the other suspects fled.
The commander further said when the police left the scene, the gang came back to continue with their operation but unfortunately met a police patrol team on duty.
Open fire
Sensing danger, the gang opened fire on the police, forcing the personnel to return same, leading to the death of the deceased.
Supt. Mr Agyapong said the police retrieved empty shells of AK47 ammunitions, a wood designed in a form of AK47 wrapped in black Sellotape and a black sack designed like a police reflector.
According to the commander, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were made up of three Nigerians and a Ghanaian. They resided in Aflao and usually moved to Akatsi to rob commuters.
Search
The police have subsequently mounted a search to apprehend the two on the run. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the St Paul’s Hospital morgue at Akatsi.
