The title ‘Okyehene’ does not exist in the books of Ghana’s Chieftaincy Ministry, Dr Nana Agyenim Boateng, President of the Concerned Youth of Ashanti (CYA), has said.
According to him, while the Asante King rules over a Kingdom, the Chieftaincy Ministry only recognises the title, Akyem Abuakwamanhene, for the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.
Dr Agyenim Boateng told Class FM on Friday, 4 May 2018 that: “They always want to compare the paramount chief of Akyem Abuakwa to the Asante Kingdom, which is impossible. When you go into chieftaincy – I’ve worked with the Chieftaincy Ministry before – we don’t even have anything called ‘Okyehene’ but we have Akyem Abuakwamanhene.”
He explained that the Akyems have three clans. “We have Akyem Kotoku which is a paramount, we have Akyem Abuakwa, it is a paramount; and Akyem Bosome and they are all paramountcies”, but, he added: “The Asante King [rules over] a kingdom.”
His comments were a reply to Mr Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, nephew to President Nana Akufo-Addo, who said he is not stupid enough to undermine Asante monarch Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as being alleged by the revered traditional leader.
At the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi recently, the furious Asante monarch is said to have specifically named Mr Otchere-Darko and the president’s Executive Secretary, Nana Asante Bediatuo, as plotting to undermine him.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) and other leading figures of the NPP, including Acting General Secretary John Boadu; Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah, as well as the Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Kwabena Senkyire, went to the Manyhia Palace on Wednesday, 2 May 2018 for a different purpose but got confronted by the enraged monarch who revealed to them that certain people close to the seat of government were making disparaging comments about him and also pitching him against the people of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area – native town of President Nana Akufo-Addo, Mr Otchere-Darko and Nana Asante Bediatuo.
This prompted an instant groveling apology by the four leading figures of the NPP, who fell on their knees before the traditional leader.
Responding to the allegation against him, Mr Otchere-Darko wrote on his Facebook page: “Am I so stupid that I would work against my own interest and turn one-half of me against the other half by inciting my mother’s people against my father’s people; that I would bite the very hand that feeds us politically? Perplexing”.
But Dr Agyenim Boateng believes Mr Otchere-Darko’s response was disrespectful.
“How can you respond in such a way to His Majesty? Let’s be sincere; courtesy demands, if such a great king has spoken and mentioned your name, is this the way to respond to him, that you are not stupid? I mean we must look further,” he stated.
He continued: “Gabby must come down; such arrogance cannot take him anywhere. This is not the way to respond when a father speaks to you. Asante Bediatuo has kept quiet but Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko is becoming unbecoming.”

nkurasesem! Where and when was he (Ashantehene) gazetted as the Lord of a kingdom!***barred word*** and needless self importance and aggrandisement.
Comments so far impressed me. Juicy and straight to the point. Let the dead buryvtgwir dead, Royal Kong. Don't mix politics with your kingship. Your records with politics is not pleasant. Your affiliation is latently known. Remain wise and act in modesty, Nana.
This is a planned and well coordinated agenda from the NDC using the aparachies around the Ashante King to bring enmity between the Ashante people and the NPP. My only problem is why the Ashante king will allow himself to be used this way. If not so who in this country does't know the history between the Ashantis and the Akyems. If Otumfuor claims Gabby and Bediatuo have said something against him who are these people that he Otumfuor can't call and warn or rebuke. Should this get to the level that the whole of Ghana knows. Hypocrites of a King. A King who cannot discipline his own child at home but prefer to do it in public is that one too a King. Mmmchew!!!
Nobody cares about Asantehene's personal problem with his character on morality, money, justice and truthfulness. No Asante will vote for NDC because of this issue. It is time for this Gyataba to think of what is important to Asantes, rather than looping Asantes in someones personal issues. When people refuse to recognize the essence of the noble institution they lead, they are scared of their shadows; and shame become their portion.
Is this guy really a Dr? Agyenim Boateng guy is a grown man with no brains.
GHANA NEEDS THE HELP FROM GOD. WHAT IS ALL THESE ABOUT? WE NEED TO BE SERIOUS AS A NATION. DOES ROYALTY PUT FOOD BEFORE YOUR TABLE AS A GHANAIAN?WE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF OURSELVES AS A NATION. LOOK AT THE ROBBERY SITUATION, UNEMPLOYMENT, BAD ROADS, COST OF LIVING?WE SHOULD BE SERIOUS AS A NATION.
IN GHANA WE HAVE VERY SERIOUS PROBLEMS TO DEAL WITH: BAD ROADS, ARMED ROBBERY, CORRUPTION, BUT THIS SO CALLED CYA IS PREOCCUPIED WITH WHAT OTHERS ARE ALLEGEDLY SAYING ABOUT ASANTEHENE. EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR VIEWS. THERE ARE SOME ASANTES WHO DETEST ASANTEHENE, AND HE KNOWS THAT SO GIVE US A BREAK. HE IS NOT GOD!!
what is wrong with this so called Dr Agyenim Boateng? if you are Ashanti and you want to revered your chief or king, so be it. you can not impose Asantehene as a chief of King of Ghana. he is a chief or king of Asantes. And how did you want Gabby to respond to Asantehene'S OUTBURST?
MASSA, THESE THINGS ARE NEEDLESS. LET US TALK ABOUT BREAD AND BUTTER ISSUES. ASANTEHENE RULES ONLY THE ASANTES. HE DOES NOT RULE OVER ALL OF US IN GHANA. WHETHER AKYEM ABUAKWAHENE OR WHATEVER THEY CALL IT, HE ALSO RULE OVER SOME PEOPLE. NO MATTER THE SIZE OF ASANTEHENE'S LAND, HE DOES NOT RULE OVER GHANA. IT IS ONLY THE PRESIDENT THAT RULE OVER THE WHOLE GHANA AND ALL THESE CHIEFS ARE UNDER THE PRESIDENT. WE ARE JUST PRESERVING OUR OLD TIME TRADITIONS FOR RESPECTING OUR CHIEFS THATS WHY OUR PRESIDENTS BOTH CURRENT AND FORMER HUMBLE THEMSELVES WHEN THEY VISITS OUR CHIEFS, OTHERWISE, THEY SHOULD HAVE STOOD UP FOR OUR PRESIDENT.
