Eight girls participating in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Bawku West District have been confirmed pregnant.

Additional 20 girls who could not report to their various examination centres to write the exams are also suspected to be pregnant.

Two other boys could not write the exams as result of death and dropout from school respectively.

Madam Cecelia Sumaila, District Director of Education for the area, who confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency during visits to some examination centres in the district, said if the attention of her office had been drawn earlier to the incident, it would have made efforts to arrange for the absent girls to write the exams.

Madam Sumaila urged the candidates to conduct themselves properly in the examination room and avoid any form of cheating.

She expressed confidence in the supervisors, invigilators and inspectors to discharge their duties professionally.
A total number of 2046 candidates, comprising 1020 males and 1026, females, from 50 public and private schools were registered to sit for this year’s BECE in eight centres in the district
