Education Minister Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has sent a strong message to teacher trainees that they will not be given permanent employment if they do not do their national service.
On Wednesday, 7 November 2018, members of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) embarked on a demonstration against the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service over the insistence of the two supervisory authorities that they do the national service.
Clad in red to signify their anger, the TTAG members marched through the principal streets of Accra with placards which read: "Thanks for Allowance but post us now", “You gave us an allowance and so what?”, “Education sector is in limbo”, “Napo must go”, “NPP, we are tired of promises; post us now”, “NPP has betrayed us, GES post us now”.
Speaking at the launch of a World Bank report in Accra on Thursday, however, the minister said: “I heard the teacher trainees say that: ‘Yes, we are going to do induction and probation, but we don’t want to do national service’. Really?
“When we say your induction and probation period is the same as your national service period, why don’t you want to do it? Nurses do it, doctors do it, lawyers do it. Everybody who has gone through the tertiary system does national service. So, everybody is going to do it. It is a fight I’ll love because you have to tell me why you are better than somebody else. If you don’t do your national service, we don’t get to employ you. We are going to do it,” he said.

The minister of education should think of how to fix the distruction done to our educational system with the introduction of the double track system and stop being arrogant. Is this the change they so much preached about in 2016? Look at the congestion in our schools, look at the harsh conditions in our schools. The reality of the problems is that, NNP is supper incompetent in handling the affairs of the country. 2020 will soon come. We will kick you away like football.
good show Napo no service no job... lawlessness train teachers
The ministers of education and health are the nemesis of this current government. They are so arrogant and will surely send the government into opposition. I have deeply regretted voting for this government. The president, his vice, 110 ministers and several appointees are clueless and confused. They are not only competent but confused as well. If care is not taken, the anger of the citizenry will one day explode and lead to another unwarranted uprising
when i completed teacher training in 1997, we were bonded at the time for 2 years - it was same as national service. we all obliged and stayed in for 2 years. after the 2 years most of us left into university and some also travelled abroad. i don't get it why these teachers don't want to do it. its just crazyyyyy! they're stupiddddddd!!! if they don't want to do it, they can find their own jobs.
They should do national service. One year field service is part of their training, it can not be classified as national service. Teachers and nurses in ghana are very annoying. They seems to think that government should provide them job once they finish their study. Always threatening no job no vote, they should keep their vote or better still vote for any party they like, the fact is they Must do national service
tr trainees don't do national service because they spent one year on the field as part of training. Mr minister national service personnel are different from workers placed on probation. probation or induction take place at one's permanent work place; one needs to be appointed before.
YES NOW THE MINISTER HAS SPOKEN NO SERVICE NO JOB. IN YOUR DEMOSTRATION YOU WERE CALLING FOR THE COME BACK OF JOHN MAHAMA OK NOW THE MINISTER IS SAYING NO SERVICE NO JOB LET US SEE WHO HAS THE POWER TO GIVE JOBS.YOU HAVE NOW SEEN YOUR SMOOTHNESS LEVEL.GO AHEAD FOR MORE HOLDING OF PLACARDS AND THE CALL FOR JOHN MAHAMA.
The train teachers aren't above the law , they should serve the nation period
Brilliant... We all in Support! They are becoming a nuisance
