Deputy Minister of Information, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, believes former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings may have lost woefully in her bid to snatch the NDCs flagbearership from President Mills because of wrong campaign strategies and bad timing.

Dissecting what went awry for the former First Lady, the deputy Information Minister said “clearly majority of the delegates were not enthused that the president was being challenged in just his first term of administration.

“...the timing was wrong and the campaign strategy was wrong. It contributed to the antipathy for them. As much as the delegates love you, they don’t want the ship to sink; they want things that will unite us. But when you try to deride the other person it becomes wrong…,” he told Bernard Avle of Citi FM.

What was initially expected to a tight two-horse race rather turned into a lopsided contest.

At last Saturday’s National Delegates’ Congress of the National Delegates Congress (NDC) held in Sunyani, President Mills won the party’s Presidential race in a landslide victory when he polled more than 96% of the total votes cast. Whiles Nana Konadu barley scraped a little over 3 percent.

Whiles some have described her defeat as a humiliation, others even believe this is the time for the former First Lady to permanently call it quits with regards to her presidential ambition.

But Okudzeto Ablakwa does not feel the former President, Jerry John Rawlings and the wife have been disgraced. He cautioned against NDC members being too hard on the Rawlingses following Nana Konadu’s failure to give a concession speech.

He was optimistic that the former president and his wife will not turn their backs on the NDC by leaving the party, saying: “I think they will all come around and we will see them under the umbrella in 2012…”
