A former Deputy Interior Minister has revealed that the meeting in which former President Mahama requested the controversial Cantonments bungalow was arranged by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the instance of President Akufo-Addo.
Mr. Kwabena Acheampong also confirmed that Mr. Mahama and the then president-elect Akufo-Addo “had a gentleman’s agreement” for the latter to live in that house.
“After the elections, Nana Akufo-Addo requested a meeting, through the Otumfuo Osei Tutu with [then] president Mahama…at this meeting [former] president Mahama requested to keep where he is staying and Nana Akufo-Addo agreed.
“This was followed with a letter from the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah to the transition team…” But after hue and cry, Mr. Mahama became disinterested in the house at the No.3 Prestige Link, Cantonments in Accra.
The former president had requested to keep the house as part of his retirement package. He has lived in the house since 2009: as a vice president and president.
Mr. Acheampong noted that since the two agreed in principle, there was nothing wrong for President Akufo-Addo to change his mind and communicate same to his predecessor.
“If you no longer agree to it, you should not let it sound as if he was holding on to something he was not entitled to,” he criticised how the government handled the whole issue.
In his assessment, the former government official accused the Akufo-Addo led government of exhibiting “pure bad faith” in the bungalow saga.
Mr. Acheampong is hoping that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, who is bereaved in the heat of the brouhaha, would make his voice heard on the controversy later on.
“I am praying that after Otumfuo has gone through his mother’s funeral, he will come out and issue a statement on it, because we need to be truthful to ourselves as a nation,” he stated.
Commenting on the same issue, the NPP Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Emmanuel Agyarko would not touch on who called for the meeting.
He was however emphatic that what the two agreed on was “completely out of line”. He asserted, “I find it unpalatable; it was completely out of taste”.

PLEASE STOP DISTURBING THE KING OF GHANA (OTUMFUOR OSEI TUTU II) WITH TRIVIAL MATTERS AND LET HIM CONCENTRATE ON HIS MORAL HIGH GROUND DEVELOPMENT ISSUES FOR THE COUNTRY.
SO ALL OF US OUR VIEW DOESNT MATTER BUT THE ASANTEHENE. THIS IS WHAT MAHAMA HAS BROUGHT THIS COUNTRY TO NO REGARD TO THE CONSTITITION AND ROLE OF LAW . A WHOLE FORMER PRESIDENT BEHAVOURING LIKE A CLASS 1 BOY ASKING ELDERS TO INTERCEDE FOR HIM
The ashanti kingdom has fallen ever since john mahama got into with otumfuor and otumfour is afraid if Akufu-Addo start the prosecutions of the corrrupt people. "s3 3hwene nya a na ani anya"
For me ; whether Nana Addo ; Jon Mahama or the Ashantehene arranged such meeting is irrelevant; the fact of the matter is that a meeting was called to discuss certain vital state issues including the issue of what Nana Addo would do in terms of prosecuting of a lot of these NDC political thiffs including perhaps the matter of investigating Atta Mills death refer Martin -Amidus comment); the issue as to whether Jon Mahama should stay in the state bungalow was a minor issue raised by Jon Mahama ; to me Nana Adddo in his 'goodwill' and having a light head of happiness of having won the election just agreed to some of the reqest without thinking of the political consequence ; the reasons are simple ; the Ashanthene is not and estate agent and has no locus to be discussing the allocation of state properties to ex-presidents ; so why on earth was this Ashanthene involved in such discussion besides why was the matter not referred to the Houses of Chiefs; to me this Ashantehene has not learnt his lesson when he was adviced by the Ashanteman Council not to get involve with this Mahama family after the 2012 elections petition ; Is the Ashanthene -Kweku Dua better than other Chiefs and is the Ashantehene above the law of the land ;this Ashantehene should not under estimate Nana Addo because he will take action against all those who have stolen state monies and will jail them no matter what this Ashanthene thinks ; to me the state of Ghana's faeces of corruption have been pertuated and encouraged by the Ashantehene ; the man man is just VERY DISHONEST and a KROOK and have enocuraged Jon Mahama to sow the seeds of dishonesty in society today ;did the Ashanthene think Nana Adddo will condone CORRUPTION !!! besides did Jon Mahama not have a place to live before he became a politician and why did he not do same for KUFFOUR; why should the Ashanathene condone such flatu.. lence and a slap in the face of Ghanaians !!!!!!
The article says Akofo Addo arranged the meeting through Otomfour. It wasn't his royal majesty who fixed it. Nd I guess it wasn't abt his bungalow either. It was to thank him directly nd to dicuss other pressing matters but ex pres. Manama being so obsess with that bungalow sneak it in. Akoffo Addo being a gentleman nd also for him to have called for that meeting nodded in affirmative without thinking twice what the transition act says.it was Mahama who went there on the blind side of Akoffo Addo. Haven't thought of keeping that bungalow his legal team would've told him the law wasn't on his side. So he took advantage of their happy moment nd chipped it in. Ex pres. Mahama went there pre meditated of wen to strike at the right moment so if we talk of bad faith then it is Mahama who exhibited it not innocent Nana Addo who only extended a hand of appreciation.
