President Nana Akufo Addo in his speech during Ghana’s 60th independence anniversary on 6 March, 2017, is quoted to have said that the UGCC “met to demand independence from the British and 70 years after that event, one still marvels at the clarity of thought and the passion that they displayed…some of the names of that momentous day have survived in our written history and folk memory.
Five of them are on our Ghanaian currency: Joseph Boakye Danquah; Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey; William Ofori-Atta; Ebenezer Ako-Adjei; and Edward Akufo-Addo. Kwame Nkrumah, the sixth of the Big Six on the currency, was to join them later.”
The President suggested that the struggle for independence was successful through the efforts of several others in 1957 and not only one person; Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
This generated controversy as many are of the view that the President attempted to re-write history.
Speaking to this issue, the managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr wonders why prominence is being given to this issue ‘which had been settled a long time ago’ when there are more important matters to deal with.
Kwesi Pratt, who was contributing to a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji, said: “this debate is absolutely needless and useless…because the history has been settled for a very long time. All over the world Nkrumah has become an iconic figure…that is why the only edifice that stands tall at the AU headquarters is Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah…”
According to him, "trying to denigrate a tall figure like Nkrumah is like kicking your bare feet against a rock. The only thing which will hurt in this process is the feet not the rock and I would like to advise those who are intent on doing this to watch out".
"We are told that this debate is to enable us learn about our history; I’m ashamed and embarrassed. This country has relived history as a stand-alone subject in our curriculum. If you want people to learn about history, is it through such useless and needless debate? Or should we or should we not reintroduce history as a stand-alone subject in our curriculum…"

@ Gyimah. All we are saying is that only one person becomes the goal king; that only one person becomes the overall best player at the end of the season.
Are we saying it was only Nkrumah that fought for our independence. Come on let's be realistic. One person cannot fight for our independence
2017 after 60 years of Dumsor these guy still waste hours talking about unnecessary stuff.
In the abundance resources the fuuul wants to sell ECG and call it enlistment
Nkrumah or not, where are we today?
Nrumah is compared with other great black leaders. Not UGCC members
Why was Nkrumah invited to Gold Coast? UGCC movement didn't know where to start and how to go about the process achieving independence. To make matters worst, they shamefully betrayed Nkrumah when the going became tough. Nkrumah later formed CPP with slogan "self government now" which eventually led the then Gold Coast to gain independence from the British. Is on record how several elements within the UGCC movement went behind Nkrumah to meet the the British Queen to delay granting Gold Coast independence. UGCC only dreamt of independence and ironically, turned round to work against Nkrumah.
All these be skin pain ooooo. Observers go worry saa go for grave.
Mary was the mother of Jesus but Mary is never celebrated as the savior of the world. Mary might have shed her blood when she gave birth to Jesus Christ but that blood was not shed for the atonement of our sins. Jesus had apostles who came before him, assisted him and continues his work after he was crucified but none of them can take the place of Jesus as the Savior of the world. Let the propagandists know that Kwame Nkrumah is the one who led Ghana to achieve independence and this is known all over the world. Akufo Addo should focus and do something for posterity to remember him. Posterity should not remember Akufo Addo as someone who tries to erase Nkrumah from the history of Ghana.
No freedom fighter in this world fought alone. Not Martin Luther King, not Mandela, Not Kwame Nkrumah but these figure are all icons so what is Nana Addo's point?. Kwame Nkrumah broke away from UGCC and formed CPP and he was able to win elections with CPP to become the first president. Have we not seen break aways in Ghana- Ndoum and his PPP from CPP, Konadu Rawlings and her NDP from NDC which contested but could not get even 1% of votes. Nkrumah's party won the vast majority so what is Nana saying. Besides was Nana Addo himself not part of the CPP, was J.B. Danquah not a criminal convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction, with one of the judges being Akuffo Addo. Truths all the way so what is nana saying. If Nana Addo wants to remind Ghanaians of the history he should not be selective, he should bare all things out, Tell us about who masterminded the Kulungugu coup forinstance.
