Many NDC bigwigs are blaming former President John Mahama for the defeat the party suffered in the 2016 general elections, but former Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region has begged to differ.
According to him, the defeat the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) experienced in the 2016 elections was a collective failure of all party officials including himself as certain policies they implemented pushed the NDC into opposition.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Baba Jamal disclosed that policies like scrapping teacher and nursing trainees allowances in an election year brought the downfall of the party.
He again stated that the defeat of the NDC was largely caused by the increase in the Electoral College during the party’s primaries as it brought disunity into the party.
“I realised that our primaries caused our defeat due to the disintegration it brought. The mode of selecting Parliamentary Candidates was wrong and we shouldn’t try it again. Every seat we won by 2000 or 3000 votes, we lost them all in the 2016 election, and so clearly, it was the primaries which caused those loses,” he said.
He further asserted that the failure of the party to stop MCEs, DCEs and Ministers who were not MPs and Presidential Staffers to contest sitting NDC MPs in the primaries also caused the NDC fortunes in the 2016 election, as many of the sitting MPs lost their seats to government appointees with full understanding that the appointees have the support of the President.
“Initially we suggested that MCEs, DCEs, Ministers who are not MPs and Presidential Staffers shouldn’t contest any sitting NDC MP. The issue was that when the Presidential Staffer and appointees contested a sitting NDC MP, the perception was that the President was in support of the Staffers and the Appointees, and that brought bickering in the party, especially when the MPs lost their seats to the Staffers and Appointees,” he asserted.
“Ministers and Appointees attitudes toward party members whenever they visit their offices brought anger as the foot soldiers sometimes sit for many hours without anybody attending to them. These are the three major issues which caused our downfall in the 2016 election, and it is not the President who didn’t do his work well,” he indicated.

John Mahama and his NDC appointees are corrupt, greedy and incompetent. It is unbelievable for our president to accept a ford car as bribe from a foreigner and gave him overpriced govt contracts. NDC lost bcos of CORRUPTION CORRUPTION CORRUPTION. The number of NDC MPs will further reduce in 2020.
you forgot 3 key issues: 1. Corruption 2. Lies 3. Deception (eg. if you see a goat say it is a cow)
Baba Jamal, you either forgot to add corruption or deliberately left out over corrupt practices u guys spent in ur term. Ghanaians are gradually becoming wise although still oblivious if it comes to accountability. NDC should know first hand why Ghanaians voted them out, Is the corruption !!! Hello ?
Ghanaians are no f.oo.ls. mahama is tainted big time with corruption, the Ford saga is a classical example plus his brother Ibrahim now at EOCO...what else can we say/
It is obvious the NDC is still in a dream land. Corruption from the President to the appointees was the cause of their defeat. Stealing left right centre was the cause of your defeat Mr Jamal and Mahama is not in any better position to erase that from the minds of Ghanaians. The earlier you bring in one of the cadres known for accountability, probility and transparency the better for you. Obviously 2020 is not for you so please prepare for 2024. Mahama will loose the second time and even the third time big!Dr Bawumia looks more credible than Mr Mahama as things stand right now. Following Kweku Bakoo's advice of using Mahama will spell your doom for a very long time.
Great Diagnostician!!! The reasons are obvious but you all refuse to admit it.
If during the 2020 elections, NDC tries to engage their boys to intimidate voters, they will regret doing that. Ghanaians do not want them in their politics any more. My advice is this: All tribes must not allow ndc to manipulate them. I mean ewes, gas, fantes etc must turn their backs on NDC.
Well, lets look at this scenario. After the 2012 election petition, the SCJs made it vividly clear that NDC in collaboration with EC manipulated the voters'register. From Jamal's comments, he makes it sound like Ghanaians would have voted for NDC had it not been the withdrawal of teachers'allowance and others but clearly, the NPP made it impossible for them to rig the elections through manipulation, padding and disenfranchising voters. Kofi Adams confessed their IT failed them. Which implies, they could not hack into the database of the Electoral Commissionn and the EC Chair could also not do anything to help them. Therefore, Ghanaians since 1992 have never voted NDC in power in Ghana elections and it will never happen in 2020. In fact, they will be kicked out of parliament in 2020.
