The biases of the Speaker have been exposed following his recent comments according to the managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr.
The Minority in Parliament has accused the Speaker Prof Mike Ocquaye of being bias. Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu said on Thursday, July 27 that "you know the essence of parliamentary questions is significant and integral to the exercise of oversight. Your refusal to allow me even as Minority Leader to proceed can only be an effort to cripple us".
Some Members of the Minority walked out of the chamber following what they described as a bias posture of the Speaker towards the Majority.
Delivering a lecture in commemoration of August 4, 1947, Friday, the Speaker blamed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for various problems in the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
According to him, if CPP is determined to survive, their focus shouldn’t be on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) because they (the NPP) are not out to destroy them but rather should concentrate on the NDC because they created confusion within the CPP party which made it broken and fragmented into six political parties.
“The CPP has been penetrated by the newly created NDC.....and that they have created confusion within the party which was then broken and fragmented into six political parties. And I wrote if the CPP wants to survive, they should not look our way because we are not out to destroy them. They must proceed to extricate themselves from the bowels of the NDC, then they will survive because as at now they are swallowed and as a truism, they know or should know who swallowed them”
Contributing to a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji, Saturday, Kwesi Pratt said: “I feel sad that the speaker of parliament has gone this far at a time that he is speaker. I feel so worried and sad. The biases of the speaker are now so open because he is flaunting them…Mike Ocquaye and others are so one-sided it’s unbelievable…”

You seem alone in this view. According to you, the UGCC was launched on 4th August 1947 as a what? As an elite coffee (rather cocoa) drinking club? And they prepared a draft constitution, with a proposed name and national flag and mascot for an independent Ghana? And they paid board and salary for the return of Kwame Nkrumah from the US/UK to spearhead what agenda? I have heard these (hi)stories from men of integrity other than Prof Ocquaye, men who were there. And with documentary evidence. Wake up Bro. Facts are sacred. Truth is often told quietly but can never be submerged. What is nauseating is your way of ignorantly mangling 'facts' and presenting them as truth.
It feels nauseating reading some of the comments made on here regarding this issue. It is more dangerous to our country, how the historic facts are being twisted. The danger even transcends to younger generations whom may not know the truth because politicians and lecturers have decided to plainly lie in the face of truth. The UGCC was NEVER a political movement until Nkrumah came on board. Members of the UGCC then, were elite men whom only met once in a while to pour out their frustration over the oppressions of the colonial regime. When Ako Adjei resigned as secretary to what WOULD BECOME UGCC, members of these elite group became privy to Nkrumah's project of advocating for an independent Africa as a continent. Infact Nkrumah was a co secretary for the fifth pan african congress held in Manchester England. Therefore how can @wiseman-usa comment that members of the UGCC offered Nkrumah the platform to launch his political career. Obviously you are ***barred word***. Finally, arguments by elements of the NPP and the UP tradition, that members of the elite group that would become UGCC had intentions of an independent Gold Coast before Nkrumah was brought on board, is so LAUGHABLE and RIDICULOUS; to describe the least SO CHILDISH. How does an intent be describe also as manifestation? Like they say "I GET BEFORE NO BE PROPERTY". Why waste money to bring Nkrumah if the elite men knew how to obtain their objective..? How can JB Danquah who barely won any elections; even from his tribe's people be compared or hailed against Nkrumah who won many election in Ghana.
We must recognize the hen that laid the golden egg; else we will not be able to build the desired peaceful, united and strong country. Indeed, when it comes to Nkrumah and UGCC, many people will make choices having studied and analyzed the events that led to the Ghana's independence and the raging debates in our contemporary politics. In fact, the truth be told that had it not been the invitation by the UGCC, Nkrumah, wouldn't have gotten the platform to launch his political ambition. Now we are at a point that we recognize the wrongs of the past, make the necessary corrections and move on rather than amateurish name calling and the harboring of bitterness against one another.
When Kwaesi Pratt talks about political biases of someone else I feel like throwing up! MASA KWESI PRATT IS A LACKEY OF THE NDC AND THAT IS CLEAR TO EVERY GHANAIAN. PERIOD!!!! When everyone compares him to Kwaku Baako, the difference is a "Well Researched Intellectual Discussant" versus a "Blind Follower and ***barred word*** of the NDC". Biases indeed. Kwesi you don't have a stick in your eyes. YOU HAVE TIMBER IN YOUR EYES.
Pratt will not take time to learn the facts but rather jumping from one radio station to another.Just using Nkrumahs name to make money
You see People turn to be biased without realizing that they are being biased and hence seem to miss otherwise, very important facts. Because they are so much consumed or obsessed by their thinking and reasoning- that they fail to express their appreciation where and when it is deserved and due. I believe Nkrumah was politically prepared in his own right and had made his mark before he was recognized and invited to Ghana. Hence, he was entrusted with fulltime secretarial and organizational position to pursue the independence course, a common course shared by those who invited him. Therefore, there was no doubt that his intellectual capability and political acumen were not underrated. It is, Indeed, very important to note that, the inviters were intellectual, political and unilateral in appreciating that Nkrumah was fit for the Job. They were, however, in the course of development sidelined by Nkrumah, because Nkrumah was too ambitious, authoritative, and rigid in his course to handle or be engaged in any intellectual discourse. He was strategic, ambitious and not diplomatic that was why he unnecessarily created enemies for himself both inside and outside Ghana. And that contributed to his downfall and he failed grievously in his course- not in terms of attaining independence per se. Indeed, he couldn't have just coped with Busia, and the Big 6, because he believed he knew his audience better than the the Big 6 did, when he came to Ghana. And he spoke the language they understood, mobilized veranda boys into politics and they voted him into power. Whilst, Busia and Dankwa were enjoying their old Oxford life in Ghana (Kweison Sackey).Nkrumah never thought of working with those who invited him to Ghana, though they had a common course to attain Independence for Ghana. If all those brains who saw the need for our independence at the time, were not sidelined and allowed to contribute in their diverse opinions with the aim of arriving at a consensus, we could have made the best out of our independence. That One man show was a flop. If Mr Pratt holds Nkrumah's contribution to our Independence in such a high esteem to bestow on him a sole founder Of Ghana beyond any meaningful contributions others made. Then, he would be better advised to work hard to at least uphold CPP, a political tool Nkrumah used to make his accomplishment. It is only faire to note that the invitation of Nkrumah by the Big 6 to come to Ghana was very critical as the genesis of his struggle. Mr Pratt seems unwittingly be upholding NDC above CPP and Mr Pratt is a knowlegeable man.
Is Mike Oquaye not truthful about the problems of CPP? Until Kwasi Pratt realises that he is soo attached to NDC, he will continue to think he is CPP. Hypocrite Kwasi Pratt. Radio Gold slave
