Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s response to former President John Mahama in connection with the $2.5 million national digital addressing system which the latter described as “419”, was excessive.
In his response, Dr Bawumia described Mr Mahama as “clueless” and “ignorant”, adding that the former president would have done himself a great favour if he had read more about the project before coming out to speak about it.
Dr Bawumia also hinted that the government would soon start prosecuting officials of the Mahama administration for corruption.
But in a Facebook post on Tuesday, 7 November, Prof Gyampo said: “Please leave that for the party communicators, apparatchiks and commentators. Those who have indulged themselves in corrupt acts must be dealt with legally in a manner that does not create fear and suspicion of witch-hunting.
“Your threats to deal with them legally after sounding ballistic in your angered response to that criticism, would create an impression in some minds that people are going to be punished for critiquing your government.
“Please remember that President Kufuor once responded harshly to President Rawlings but later apologised to Ghanaians.
“Again, please remember your own refrain was always ‘incompetence, incompetent and incompetence’. The response to this wasn't the best but certainly, not as harsh as yours. Kindly note that the position of a Veep is a heat-beat away from that of the President. It requires sobriety, temperament and big heart to stomach even annihilating criticisms.
“If you have to respond, please do so via the commentators and apparatchiks. A master recipient of the sovereign fiduciary trust of the people must remain focus and not stop to throw stones at every ‘political animal’ that barks,” Prof Gyampo said.

what is harsh about bawumia's the response? it was a befitting one. kudos vice president bawumia.
I wonder the type of political lectures this professor gives to his students at Legon. He is polluting the minds of the young boys and girls in his class. Maybe he wants to be heard and eventually grab a political appointment when NDC comes to power again. He did not see anything wrong with what Mahama said about ''ppigss' and 419. a typical Ghanaian attitude. That if someone insults you and you reply that person, you are termed the bad one. theone who gave the first insult should be pampered. And he calls himself a professor. What a pity.
another rubbish cheap, chew and pour guy labelled Professor. You don't know it all please, keep your advise. Bawumia was on point! A statement from a former president carries a lot of weight and hence demands a weighty response from a well knowledgable person. Hence Bawumia.
Lies by an incompetent, greedy and ign.oramus former president requires very harsh response. A kleptomania former president with many state cars at his disposal who will receive a car bribe from a foreigner is unbelievable. I am surprised he is not ashamed and still talking t.r.a.sh. Dzifa Attivor stole state cash through bus branding what did he do to her?
Prof, I agree with you on the point that when one rises beyond a certain point on the ladder of society he/she must 'talk well'. However, John Manama, being older, having had parliamentary experience, been a former vice president, immediate past president should have known and respected the presidency and governance better. He started it all and got less than he deserves.
Isnt it harsh enough to refer to government project as 419 and government officials as pigs
Prof. Gyampo I disagree with you on this one. The ***barred word*** criticism of the NDAS by the former president was ruthless and needed an equal measure in response.Yes he is the vice president and a heart beat away but that does take away his prerogative to point out lies in the statement by the former president. As for the promise to deal with corrupt officials legally soon is ok.Because whether he says it or not those officials will sing the song of witch hunt.
Another ediort calhimself professor hmmm.
Mahama deserves every bit of Bawumia response. A former President measures his statement before coming out. but when you depart from state manship and think of only pissing in you will meet the wrath of those who know best. Mahama is a disgrace to all Ghanaians. Prof Gyampo please let Bawumia give it to him
look at this man who always wants to be heard why are u competing with franklin CUDJO u dont v to wade into every issue u dont know more about governace than the veep? why didnt i hear u advising JM when he refered to the NPP as pigs twea
