Nana Obiri Boahen, a Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described as 'unfortunate' the assault on Adom FM's reporter, Ohemaa Sakyiwaa Ahwenepa.
Hajia Fati slapped Ohemaa at the party’s headquarters a day after Ghana hosted World Press Freedom Day.
The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has condemned the incident. The Association has said it is weighing up legal option to ensure greater respect for journalists.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has also branded the NPP Headquarters, the scene of the attack, as unsafe for journalists.
Speaking as a lawyer for Hajia Fati on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Tuesday, 8 May, Nana Obiri Boahen apologised to the journalist on behalf of his client.
Mr Obiri Boahen said: “in all honesty, what happened was unfortunate, and regrettable. Apart from being her lawyer, we have also been friends, so, I will apologise to the journalist who was attacked and to all Ghanaian journalists. It is rather unfortunate this happened and we regret it.”
