A political science lecturer has warned the National Democratic Congress will jeopardise its chances of winning the 2020 elections should it elect former president John Mahama as its flagbearer.
In the analysis of Dr. Osei Bonsu of the Methodist University, nothing has changed from the events and factors that led to the “miserable” defeat of Mahama in the 2016 presidential election for him to make a comeback.
Even though Mahama has since losing the election remained tight-lipped over calls by some party members for him to declare to once again run for the party’s flagbearership, he on Saturday responded favourably to the calls.
“To you the teeming supporters and sympathizers calling and requesting me to declare my intentions for the future, I wish to assure you today, that as a servant-leader, I have listened to your calls and reflected.
“I will not disappoint you even as we await the publication of the party’s guidelines for selecting a new leader,” he indirectly declared to contest the party’s flagbearership.
Commenting on Mahama’s indirect resolve to contest the presidency once more, Dr. Osei Bonsu said such a decision “won’t help him and his party. I don’t think it is good decision politically”.
He wondered what has changed since 2016 that will cause Ghanaians to vote for Mahama.
“If you look at the 2012 elections results, it was contentious and when it went to the Supreme Court the decision was not even unanimous, it was 5/4. The 2016 election was to prove that indeed he won the 2012 elections but he lost miserably,” Dr. Osei Bonsu told Onua FM in Twi Sunday.
For him, the NDC should consider a candidate who can go beyond the 2020 elections.
“Supposing he [Mahama] doesn’t win in 2020 and Nana Akufo-Addo wins, 2024 will not help the party. If they send someone different and he doesn’t win, by 2024 NPP will be bringing someone new and by that time the NDC person would have been sold well; he would be popular by then and would have known the political terrain well,” he argued.
He observed the series of Unity Walks organised by the party as part of its reorganisation drive failed to achieve the purpose, as in his estimation, it could not unite the NDC.
“For me, the walk was rather a disunity walk. What at all did he say throughout these walks that he believes united the party? Nowhere did he say something that united the party,” he stated.
According to Dr. Osei Bonsu, Mahama was always on the neck of the government and was only good at criticising it.
Again, he said the party should have involved all the persons who have declared their intention to contest the flagbearership race in the Unity Walks.
“You shouldn’t forget there are other people who have come forward to declare their decision to contest. So if it was Unity Walk, why didn’t the party let those persons also participate and speak to the people?
“That would have demonstrated how united the party was,” he said.

The comeback of Mahama is a blessing for the hungry NDC foot soldiers and delegates. If nothing at all, some of the cash they l00ted will find its way back into poor pockets and the ecomini once again. Thank goodness for this un*wise move my the friend of Andrew Solomon. Welcome Ghana's USAIN BOLT to the party!!!!!!!
You guys should sit in Jubilee house and be doing face bookin. Time will tell
I have wondered why in many boxing fights the loser always calls for a re-match when they know that it will be difficult to beat a title holder. John Mahama is looking for a re-match which he will loose miserably. The corruption and arrogance from his government is so fresh in our minds that nothing will convince we floating voters to vote for him. he should forget it and allow his party to bring a suitable person to face NANA: His comming back is not a threat to NPP but rather very annoying and disrespectful to many Ghanaians who feel that enough is enough
I AM GLAD MAHAMA IS CONTESTING AGAIN, DEFINITELY HE WILL LOSE BUT WHAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY IS THAT HE AND HIS FAMILY THAT STOLE THE STATE MONEY ARE GOING TO WASTE SOME OF THESE STOLEN MONIES, LETS BE TRUTHFUL WHAT WAS THE FINANCIAL STAND OF IBRAHIM MAHAMA BEFORE HIS CORRUPT BROTHER BECOME A PRESIDENT, FRANKLY, HE WASN'T RICH AS HE BECAME WHEN THE CORRUPT BROTHER WAS A PRESIDENT. THIS TELL US SOMETHING, SO LET HIM COME AND WASTE SOME THESE DUBIOUS ACQUIRED MONIES.
Mr. NPP Political Science lecturer, pls keep your prediction to yourself. lets wait to see.
Who Jah bless Know one curse In Shaa Allah NDC will bounce back to power come 2020 with Formal President John Mahama. The political science lecture is entitle to his view and that will not stop the NDC coming to power.NDC In Shaa Allah here we come 2020. to develop our great nation
only a blind person like mahama and kofi adamu believes ndc is united. most of the party ple calling on him to come back are doing so for fear of going to jail. they are doing so to get some cover from him but what they dont know is that mahama himself is jail bound. ndc has no desire to lead this country again bcos they can not do it. it is just too much for their fried brains. allow mahama the only one with a cooked brain to destroy them forever.
Mahama is so incompetent that he cannot even see that he has almost no chance of getting to the presidency again. He should forget about physical things and look into the issue spiritually. He will realise that God has done for him what he (God) has not done for any other Ghanaian. And to start thinking of contesting elections again means that he has not even appreciated what God has done for him all this while. What on this earth do you want again? Now you are heading for self-imposed humiliation and disgrace
Completely wrong for Mahama to contest the flagbearership race. His time is over. NDC will be in opposition for so long if he wins the primaries and contest in 2020. It will be a cool chop for NPP. 2016 election results showed that Mahama did not win the 2012 elections. He became the president by chance. He should stay away from the presidency. Not only does he has to think about his decision but also reflect and do introspection of himself.
OK so because he is NPP he can't comment? Where do we get this idea from that when someone has an affiliation his comment is null and void. Look at the substance of wat he is saying and tell me if it is true or not and stop this he is npp and so on. After all npp has to do is fulfil their promises and regardless of who u bring npp will still win.
