Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs has rubbished the national identification card registration exercise.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme on Wednesday, Allotey Jacobs questioned the logic in issuing the card when Ghanaians are suffering and have other pressing needs.
He wondered if having a Ghana card should be the priority of the government at the expense of providing basic necessities to the citizenry.
Accounting the cost involved in the exercise, Allotey believed the specified amount could be used to address the road, health and infrastructure challenges among others confronting the nation.
“Why are we in a hurry to have Ghana card?...Everybody is complaining about their roads. People are complaining about health facilities. People are complaining about schools under trees. So, is our priority Ghana card?” he asked.
The NDC Regional Chairman further lambasted the government about the requirements for a person to hold the card, wondering how it's going to be achievable “when you know that almost about 60/70 percent of your population are uneducated. Then you go and say that they should bring their birth certificate and passport. How many people even get passport at the Passport Office?”
The issuance of the national identification card called Ghana card is among government's initiatives to formalize the economy.
The registration exercise will reportedly cost the country $1.2billion and span for a period of 15 years.

I'm hypnotized from the words of this Radio pundit who even doesn't know the value of identification. Police take bribes because offenders cannot be traced when left off hook. hence instant fine is engaged and the bonanza pocketed by these corrupt officials. With the identification card, one can be located and a fine sent to him/her without difficulty whereby the said money going directly into governments chest. So many benefits but to mention a few.
IF A REGIONAL CHAIRMAN OF NDC PARTY CAN TALK LIKE THIS THEN GHANA HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO. HE DOES NOT READ, NOT KNOWING ALL HIS MPS ENDORSED THIS IN PALIAMENT. HE WAS STILL NOT IN AGREEMENT WITH KWAKU BAAKO WHEN HE WAS BEING CORRECTED THAT HIS MPS GAVE A ONE HUNDRED PERCENT YES TO IT.
Pls chk wot party he belongs to. It might be a requirement to speak this way. Smh
Oh my God!!!. This man needs to be educated on the need for Ghana Card.
Is Allotey Jacobs asking Ghanaians whether the NIA is a priority to us? God have mercy. This tells me that NDC is warped in their thinking and does not have the nation at heart. Look at where we have come from since 1992 when we had to queue for voters ID to date where political parties fight to determine who a Ghanaian is any time we're about to have an election. And he's saying it's not a priority? Why does NDC fight over every good thing for the country? This morning I listened to him at PEACE FM KOKROKOO and he denied vehemently that Prez JDM never condemned the NIA for asking Ghanaians to use either the Passport or Birth Cert for identification. However, the story was read to him CITYNEWSONLINE, and later when Kweku Baako drew the panels attention to the fact that NDC MPs endorsed the bill 100% for it to become a law he started to retreat without even apologizing to listeners (and the august panel). NIA should just ignore them not give in to their diabolical plans to 'put sand in our gari'. They should continue to make themselves irrelevant in parliament (and the country as a whole) and Ghanaians are watching them closely. It's a shame that they take one step forward and two steps backwards when it comes to national development. All they think about is 'ways and means' to win an election. I don't to say NDC is a JU-LOR FIA FI TOR party but seriously Nyame Ahu mo oooo
