On a day filled with grief, the late Kwesi Amissah-Arthur’s widow, Matilda Amissah-Arthur’s tribute was tinged with anger on a day the nation had gathered to pay final respects to the former Vice President.
In Matilda Amissah-Arthur’s tribute, she said she had been amazed by the number of people who had shown her love following the passing of her husband, but not for the right reasons.
“I asked myself, is this Ghana? Are all these people in Ghana because the maligning, the lies, the treachery, the wickedness, the deliberately changing things so that you could look better than others.”
Her tribute appeared to share the sentiments of those who felt Kwesi Amissah-Arthur was marginalized by his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) despite his decades worth of service to the party.
“Today I asked the same question, did people really know my husband. Did people take time to know him? The false accusations, the lies, the maligning. Did they know him?”
But in words of comfort, she concluded saying her family cherished the late Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.
“We knew you, and we know you are a rare gem, and we treasure you, and we are very proud of you,” she said.
“A thousand tears won’t bring you back. I know because I have cried. But I know that you made your mark in this country and beyond and you touched many lives and those who cared to know you and those who gave you time to prove yourself know what a rare gem you are.”
Kwesi Amissah-Arthur died on June 29, 2018, after he collapsed at the Airforce Gym in Accra during a workout session.
He is expected to be buried at the military cemetery in Accra.

Its rather unfortunate but Maame Matilda got it all wrong again...Her husband knew very well the political terrain yet accepted the challenge; and Im sure she enjoyed all the presidential treats thats goes with it with her family so whats her point ? Ckctcdi3 nebo dw3...is that not so ? She should go and ask what Akufo Addo's wife had to endure for many decades from her husbands party on which's campaign platform she danced well well few years ago. Please allow Ghanaians to mourn with you. Im not sure these rantings can change the political spit fire from all sides. May PK's soul rest in peace anyway.
Did you not recall that Amissah Arthur once said because Akuffo Addo is short,he cannot see all the tarred roads as he drives on them? Do you call that a flattering remark?Let me say that the late vice president I know might have said these things through clenched teeth because clearly the man was not brought up that way. You know how Ghanaian politics and especially NDC politics is.The more abusive you are the more you are celebrated. However when a widow is paying tribute to her beloved husband is certainly not the time to bring up these things. Remember Naadu Miils? What was't done to her husband? Yet she kept a dignified silence and this is the difference between tackiness and class.
Didn't you hear barwumia calling him voodoo economist? Today, the same person is reading tribute to him. Is that not the hypocrisy the woman is calling out. Didn't you hear some of his party people insulting him for the loss of the party? Didn't you hear his opponent calling him a gay? You should stop pretending you don't know what the woman was saying. Wait when nana dies tomorrow you will see how Ndc leaders who have insulted daily would say.
Madam take it easy. Nobody is without a blemish.Would you like to let the Ghanaian public know how you have manoeuvred at a publishing company where you've been installed as a consultant,to have a chap who had worked with this company for decades fired?Tell me,do you really think that a librarian's job is the same as that of a publisher?Madam that guy is now kicking his heels at home and he also has a family to take care of.So you see ,we are all not perfect. Your husband included. But I think he was a gentleman par excellence who found himself in the wrong assembly. You must reign in your acerbic tongue.Remember the current president has been variously accused by people of having murdered his first wife, tagged with various life threatening ailments and described in many unflattering terms, yet he soldiers on. Your husband was a humble, decent man.My pain is that he was part of a totally ruthless cruel murderous gang. May the Lord keep his noble soul.
Needless! Madam, what were you expecting people who were supposedly your hubby's opponents to say about him now that he is gone? And ur hubby(may his soul rest in peace) never said anything against his 'opponents' whilst he lived? He was an angel? Please spare us. This is just another 'Chalk' attitude. You cannot even hide that attitude whilst you mourn. What did Ghanaians and Agya Atta's opponents not say about him whilst he lived? Does it mean when he passed, those people couldn't mourn with his family? You really have attitude Matilda!
Wasnt she the same woman who got upset when a teacher requested for more chalk? Maa Matilda is one tough woman lol. I am NDC but this govt has done a lot of honour to PK much more than your govt did for Aliu. As for the insults, the rule is simple- if you dont want to be insulted dont do Ghana politics. Nana Addo has been called all sort of unprintable names but that is nature of our game sadly.
Can someone help me with an answer. Did someone seriously insult and malign Former Vice Prez Amissah-Atta like has been done to Prez Mills and Akuffo Addo? The only thing I do remember is the challenge thrown to him by the then running mate Bawumia on some economic issues. But I think this is somehow normal. OR was it within his own party? However it it is we lost a Hero. RIP PAPA AMISSAH
The woman was addressing people like you and your cohorts. How you people are so angry by her statement means you know she meant this for you.
The woman was doing exactly what people like you needed. Even when she has genuinely poured her heart we have people like you still maligning her. She was not there to please editors like you. Gimifo.
What do you mean she couldn't comport herself? What did she do that was wrong? You wanted her to come and praise those hypocrites who insulted her husband when he was alive as well as those who peddled falsehood against him and now saying beautiful things about him??????
