Peacefmonline.com can confirm that Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko, has been sacked over the controversial Novation and amendment AMERI deal.
His dismissal takes "immediate effect".
This follows claims that President Akufo-Addo was 'misled' in the new AMERI deal presented to Parliament few days ago.
A statement issued a few minutes ago and signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, said the President by a "letter dated 6th August, 2018, relieved the Minister for Energy, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, of his position, with immediate effect."
According to the statement, President Akufo-Addo "asked Mr. Boakye Agyarko to hand over his office to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. John Peter Amewu, who will act temporarily as Minister for Energy, until a substantive appointment is made".
Public Uproar
The Akufo-Addo government took the revised deal to Parliament last week under a certificate of urgency, but the House deferred its deliberation on the contract due to concerns over the cost and value for money.
Under the new proposal, the Greece-based Mytilineos International Trading Company was to assume management responsibility for the AMERI emergency power-generation arrangement negotiated by the past NDC government, in effect extending the original outsourcing agreement by ten more years.
In the supposed renegotiated agreement, government is expected to extend the $510 million deal from its original five years to 15 years with the government committing over $700 million to it.
Management of Ameri Energy has since stated that it had no discussions with government with regards to the power plants and the new deal with Mytilineos.
The new deal has, however, been described by the Minority in Parliament, the Volta River Authority (VRA), African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) and Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC Ghana) as “stinky” and “a rip-off,” and would prefer the President kicks him out of office.
"Sack Agyarko If He Fails To Resign"
At a press conference on Monday, the Senior Staff Association of the Volta River Authority (VRA) disputed claims by Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko that the newly revised AMERI deal will save Ghana some $400 million.
Chairman of the senior Staff Association Cephas Duse addressing the media Monday, said Mr. Agyarko has exhibited financial recklessness and must be given the boot from office or resign.
“We think that by the current deal, the minister has exhibited financial recklessness with intent to assist a foreign company to milk the state. We therefore call on him to resign honourably and save the nation and the government further disgrace and embarrassment....We plead with the President to sack him if he fails to resign,” Chairman of the senior Staff Association Cephas Duse said.
Their call followed a similar one by COPEC Ghana who also demanded that the President immediately sacks Mr. Agyarko for deceiving the nation.
“We, therefore, call upon the president to urgently fire or sack the Energy Minister and its communicators and prosecute them,” a press release signed by Research, Pricing and Monitoring Officer at COPEC Ghana, Sampson Addae, said on Sunday, 5 August 2018.

Hmmm when we dwell on a straight road with out zig zag we shall surely see each others back. I remember when Agerko lampoon the deal under Mahama and appear to perfect a better deal when given the opportunity now see what has happen KARMA.
If a ruler pays attention to lies, All his servants become wicked. Black banana, In politics if you act and your praise singers are from the opposition it is clear you have screwed up. God bless you... My question is, did Bawumia not read this deal? ah!
I am still struggling to understand why Mr Agyarko who was a cabinet minister, in circumvent the Cabinet review to seek presidential endorsement of the deal. This is not a case of I didnt know. I am so sad for him but Ghana first.
Great and bold decision by a sitting president. Mahama could not do the same to Opuni.
I am not surprised at all...this guy thinks competency is having a pool of bow ties and speaking big grammar.. when he made those allegations against president mahama calling him corrupt but couldn't justify those claims during the parliamentary vetting, he was hailed by the NPP and its cohorts, when he held press conferences speaking like he knows everything about managing energy, he was hailed by a bunch of super incompetent Ed10T5. last but not the least, when he drafted this incompetent contracts full of mathematical errors and submitted to parliament, He and his likes were all around the media defending the ***barred word*** embedded in the contract, today what are they saying, we should commend the president,President No-Nothing, why wont he sign the deal, if Ghanaian voted for someone who believes the problems of this country can be solved with free SHS...
In all this, one thing is evident about the Ghanaian and that is shear ENVY, HATE and HYPOCRISY. No doubt Mr Boakye Agyarko is a brilliant guy and has a lot of admirers including some of us. We should also understand that we have a president who sees and knows more and equally learned. There was shout all over the place about how bad the AMERI deal was and the need to take action. The president equally sees a wrong act and takes action and then the same Ghanaians turns round to shout why the president has taken action. Very absurd. The worse part is the use of factionalism, tribe, attack on his relatives and linking the issue to completely different cases. Can't we discuss issue in Ghana without making mention of tribe? I listen to Atta Mills brother on why Atta mill invited him to be a special personal advisor. The hate for his family people is nonintellectual and only smack of ENVY for that family. Every leader works with people he could trust especially the inner circle team.
NANA ADDO MY PRESIDENT HAS DONE VERY WELL. WE WANT TO SEE MORE OF THOSE ANS HE WILL HAVE MY VOTE AT ANYTIME. SOME OF OUR PRESIDENTS LOOK ON WHEN PEOPLE MESS UP. I TRUST THE PRESIDENT HE IS A UNIFIER HE BROUGHT AMIDU A TRUE NDC MAN INTO HIS TEAM HE SHOULD LIKEWIFE BRING THE NDC MINISTER FOR ENERGY HON KOFI BUAH TO CONTINUE WHERE HE LEFT OFF. I SEE THAT MAN WORKING WITH GREAT COMMITMENT AND I HEAR HE IS HONEST. BUT WILL THE NDC AGREE? WONT HE BE CALLED NAMES? WONT THE NPP MEMBERS GET ANGRY TO SEE THE PRESIDENT DO THAT? THIS IS GHANA FOR YOU. WE CAN NEVER BE ONE.
We should not forget to commend Occupy Ghana, IMANI, and the NGOs who are doing a tremendous job in the face of minimum resources and strenuous personal engagement. All to the ethic services of representing the interest of Mother Ghana. To them I wholeheartedly say AYIKOOOOOOO!
