General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party, John Boadu, appears to be against the holding of bye-elections in the country.
According to him, it is "needlessly expensive" to hold a bye-election and so should be abolished.
Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on PeaceFM's "Kokrokoo" regarding the Ayawaso West Wougon bye-election to be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019; the NPP Chief Scribe cited reasons for his assertion saying a bye-election hardly causes any significant change in the number of seats .
He explained that looking at the impending by-election, an election of a candidate for the constituency will only mean that a person will be replaced in the Parliamentary representation of the NPP. Thus, he added, the ruling party will have to spend more resources than necessary to ensure victory against the NDC; an additional cost hanging on the party's neck.
He has therefore appealed to the lawmakers to enact a law that will allow any party, whose Member of Parliament passes away or in the case of any eventuality; to organize its own Primaries to elect a new candidate to represent the constituents in Parliament.
“It’s (bye-election) another area that’s needlessly expensive which if we can craft a law, it would help us…If it will affect the numbers between NPP and NDC in Parliament losing or winning can change the political equation in Parliament; that will be critical. I’d accept that we hold bye-election,” he said.
He, however, asked the constituents to vote massively for the NPP candidate and wife of the late Member of Parliament for the constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan who the party believes is a "perfect replacement".

How many promises were made to Ghanaians and what percentage of that is the 41 fulfilled promises. That would have been a more measured and truthful information. I have seen street lights, roads, water systems all of a sudden working again within my constituency (Ayawaso). So what exactly am i being told if it must take the death my MP (may his gentle and kind soul rest in peace);and the quest for political power of his baby mama for the tax payer to see proceeds of his/her taxes. Hhhhmmmmm. Ayawaso voters, we will be the best judges if this is what we deserve. I rest my pen and thank you for lending me your eyes, ears and time to see, hear and read my humble thoughts. Thanks again.
Waa hw3, and the person appointed or elected by ur party, who voted for him/her and who is he accountable to. he must present him/herself to be voted for..the constituents are not only NPP and NDC pple wai..by the way is the tax payers money urs..afterall my road pokuase katapor has been there for 25years without coal tar and have been paying tax ever since..what have i gained. Blood suckers.
I feel sad when I see human beings following NPP NDC. How ***barred word*** can you get?
What must be abolished is NPP and NDC.
I THINK THERE IS LOGIC IN JOHN BOADU'S OPINION.IT MUST JUST BE A REPLACEMENT TO PARLIAMENT BY THE PARTY CONCERN TO SAVE THE TAX PAYER'S MONEY FROM THIS SORT OF BYE-ELECTION WHICH AT THE END OF THE DAY DOESN'T ADD UP TO ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT
Ama, you are not swift thinker. By the way who told you the NPP is losing? National resources to organize by-elections could be used to some other good use. After all, if the unfortunate had not happened, the MP would have stayed until the end of his term. Come again, please.
When they are losing then by-elections must be abolished. These npp guys are so deceptive and funny.
