The Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, has asked political parties in the country to denounce their vigilante groups to 'embolden' the Ghana Police Service.
Calls for the disbandment of various vigilante groups in the country increased after violence emerged during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
So far, the two major political parties: the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are known to have vigilante groups.
The IGP, who was speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, urged the parties “to immediately denounce their own vigilante groups to create the necessary awareness that will embolden the police. The truth is that if we prescribe a security solution to a politically motivated problem, you may only be reducing the pain but not curing the disease.”
"The police are poised to arrest and profile any group of people claiming to be vigilante groups irrespective of their political affiliation… death in the name of politics will no longer be tolerated in our security setting. We are declaring zero tolerance against political violence and vigilantism,” he added.
Calls To Resign
Several people across the political divide after the violence at Ayawaso West Wuogon By-election asked the IGP to resign.
According to them, he cannot stay in office after admitting that he was not aware Police vehicles and guns were being used during the by-election.
Others also feel he should resign for investigations to be carried out properly.
However, the IGP feels there's no need for him to resign.
“I don’t think my resignation or my being the IGP can influence any investigations in this country . . . Investigations cannot be influenced by me as the IGP,” he stated.

the only thing i like about this IGP is his uniform. he is the most incompetent of all IGs i come to know
The IGP should resign he does not know what he is doing.
If the IGP has any honor in himself he would have resigned voluntarily. This is a clear case of negligence, irresponsibility, incompetence, and lack of self confidence to use discretionary powers.
Mr IGP ignore the Northern D1mwi+s Congress (NDC) and their supporter's calls for you to resign. THEY ARE SIMPLY THE BEST F0==01$ IN THE WHOLE OF AFRICA. Stay focussed and pay no attention. Very soon these +wa+s will be asking their mothers and fathers to resign. There have been far worse moments of lawlessness perpetrated by the NDC during various stages of their mis-rule in Ghana especially during the Kume Preko matches when people D1£D. Muddafu--cK£rs. No one lost their b100dy jobs. The founder of the NDC is a walking mu=rd--£rer who on his orders people were shot, disappeared and women stripped and la$hed in public. Amedeka who had a hand in the judges abduction and mu-r-d-er, was let out of Ghana with a new identity and is a free man. YOU Ar$£ H01£S ON THIS PLATFORM TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER THE DARK HISTORY OR THE NDC SHOULD GO BACK AND LEARN. THE IGP WILL NOT RESIGN TODAY OR TOMORROW ID10+$. Ghana will prevail and be successful no matter what.
How can you blame an IGP who can't do his job independently? Just a PROCEED ON LEAVE memo from the president and he or she is gone. ORDER FROM THE ABOVE call to the IGP and a political violent criminal hooligan is set free. If we really want to hold our IGPs accountable for political violent criminals, we need to give them a constitutional protection similar to the Chief Justice so the IGP can do his job without fear from the powers above. Our IGPs have always been political puppets serving the interest of the appointed president. Let's shield the IGP position with a constitutional protection and see what our IGPs can do to solve political crimes. Don't judge this IGP only but also research the past IGPs and you will find similarities, they were all powerless regarding political violent criminals. A new IGP under the same circumstances will bring the same results? Calling for his resignation is neither here nor there. You can't build a new house on the same bad foundation. A paradigm shift is needed to fight political violent criminals. Constitutional protection for the position and outlawing political vigilantes will help solve political violence in Ghana. An independent IGP free of fear of PROEED ON LEAVE might have zero tolerance for political violent criminals.
why is NPP appointees becoming that foo..lish?. no one wish for ya resignation, we demanding you get jailed. foo.lish man, how can a group use police SWAT car and equipments and tell us you not aware?. fine today is NDC but tomorrow, who knows if they will use it and direct to the jubilee house to cause the removal of the president. when you dancing with a monkey, rem you a human being not a monkey. the interior minister is the fo.olish among them all, he must go to his own party man ALHAJI MALIK YAKUBU to learn how to be interior minister, use.less minister talking nonsens.e. if not for any secrete reason, you should have been sacked by now. twell me, who among the security appointees of the president really is talking or working as security expert, am even better than them. ask kufour how brilliant the security appointees were in his time. you guys are making the lame dump president use.less if you dont know and until gabby etc stoping taking $20,000 allege by ken agyapong and let the president make serious appointment, NPP can get even half of kufour 1st term. ursula mpo is minister, ahhhhh, all these ministers?. i wonder why only ken ofori attah is decieding economically for ghana, i tell you bawumia is even not listened to but he cant complain, ask him. they always wanna project their akyem appointees. is captain koda not better as interior or national security minister than kan dapah etc?. indeed we have wasted our thumbs though mahama isnt the alternative but hmm, who else.
@YAW and @Govt,NY I may be missing something. Can you explain the job specification of and IGP in Ghana if it is not to maintain law and order generally? What we are saying is that he should resign rather than making lofty speeches which both of you know that it is just a charade. This assertion is not for this IGP alone but those in positions who are not able to do their jobs due to collusion and or influence from political power levers but come out to make lofty speeches. A principled IGP will enforce the law and face the consequences if it is from NDC or NPP i Lie? If he is removed based on this, he writes a book, newspaper article and so on. It will not happen because we have no principles and morals. Enobi so?
When you recruit azooka boys then you ask IGP to do what ? The two parties must disband their vigilantes, period.
Resign for what? stop is propaganda this man wont resign for anything when did u guys started calling for resignation of this sort? My problem is that even churches have ushers who control the church seating Parties can have these groups looking at how our politics are done but the important is thing devoid of troubles. Without this guys a lot would have happened to these old men who contest these positions. These NDC zongo boys are normally brought in to take ballot boxes etc if u stop them all this ***barred word*** will also stop. Simple
@fawazi. The place is sweet.
