Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Boamah Otukonor has commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for instructing the Attorney General (AG) to prepare legislation against vigilantism.
However, he believes “if we can hold one conference and get all these stakeholders on board and discuss this matter thoroughly and come up with lasting solutions which may form a strong foundation for legislative work, I think, that one would have been a stronger way and a smarter way to deal with this matter.”
Peter Otukonor was speaking in an interview on Citi Eyewitness news, Thursday.
Speaking to the same issue on the same platform, the National Communications Director of the NPP, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah says the President's action which is commendable will ginger the two political parties to do their part.
“I think the President should be commended for his decisiveness . . . he has the right to introduce legislation . . . I think that it is a very important step. The party should be advised and the party should take it on board that it better clean up internally because the big stick will be there. I think that it is useful to have a rule especially as this (vigilantism) has become a major thorn in our political flesh, the parties must own this process," he indicated.
The President HE Nana Akufo-Addo has in fulfillment to his promise to introduce new legislation to deal with political party vigilantism, ordered the Attorney-General to draft a bill “as soon as possible”.
This directive was contained in a reply to the second letter from the NDC's Chairman, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, over the party’s reservation to the approach in dealing with the menace of party vigilantism as suggested by the President.

if the police would be responsible enough to arrest trouble makers, the question of disbanding vigilantes would not arise. let us stop unnecessary laws and arrest culprits as and when they abuse the law. if the police do not act, these less thinking persons could still misbehave in the name of something else other that vigilantes. it is the ability of the police to be alive to their responsibilities that would solve the problem not laws otherwise what happened to OKADA motor riders.
SECURITY IS A MATTER OF LAW THAN GOODWILL. THE CALL OF SOME POLITICIAN TO INVOLVE ECOWAS, UN OR WHOEVER FOR MEDIATION REVEALS THOSE WHO MADE THE CALL AS INCOMPETENTTT AND NOT SERIOUSNESSS ABOUT GOVERNANCE. NOBODY GET SECURITY ON A SILVER PLATTER. THERE ARE ALWAYS IN THE SOCIETY PEOPLE WHO WOULD ROB AND STEAL, HARM AND DESTROY LIFE AND PROPERTY. INSECURITY MIGHT ALSO BE SPONSORED BY POLITICIANS WHO MIGHT USED PEOPLE LESS ENDOWED INTELLECTUALLY IN THE SOCIETY TO FOMENT TROUBLE TO THE BENEFITS OF SUCH POLITICIANS. YES, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO GET GOOD WILL OF ALL TO MAKE THE SOCIETY SAFE, THE SECURITY OF ANY PEOPLE RELY HEAVILY ON LAWS THAT DISTINCTLY PREVENT CRIMINALS FROM OPERATION AND THE ABILITY OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO EXECUTE THEIR DUTIES. AS AG ASSIGNED TO WORK ON THE MATTER THEY SHOULD FORMULATE LAWS TO DISBAND VIGILANTISM. THEY MUST DRAW INFORMATION FROM EMIL SHORT COMMISSION AND APPLIED SOME RULED ALREADY ADOPTED BY IPAC, LIKE NO MOTOR BIKES AT POOLS AT SOME DISTANCE DURING ELECTIONS. THERE SHOULD ALSO BE NO AMASSING OF PEOPLE WITHIN CERTAIN DISTANCE FROM POLLS. AND ON BY-ELECTION PARTIES SHOULD BE MADE TO REPLACE MPS WHO DIE DIE FROM THEIR PARTY WITHIN TWO YEARS FROM GENERAL ELECTION. VACANT SEATS AFTER TWO YEARS AFTER GENERAL ELECTION SHOULD BE MADE TO REMAIN VACANT TILL THE FOLLOWING GENERAL ELECTION
