Dean of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Prof. Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum has asked the ruling government to halt a draft bill to regulate public universities in the country.
This bill according to government officials, will "provide the procedure for the establishment of Public Universities, principles of management of Public universities, the legal status of Public universities, the procedure for financing Public universities and administration and supervision of the activities of Public universities."
Some of the proposals in the Bill grant; a) the President power to dissolve the University Council; b) Allow the University Council to appoint a Chancellor and c) Allow unions to appoint only one representative on a rotational system to serve on the Council at each cycle.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa and other minority Members of Parliament, have also spoken against it.
Adding his voice to this during a panel discussion on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Opanyin Agyekum said the government cannot control universities like they do Senior High Schools and that to bring peace, the bill should be put on hold.
