A legal practitioner for the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), lawyer Abraham Amaliba says the Member of Parliament for Assin North is very keen to see Adansi Asokwa MP, Hon KT Hammond jailed for some comments he passed on his ongoing criminal trial.
James Gyakye Quayson has filed a contempt application dated July 7, 2023, in an Accra High Court against Hon. Kobina Tahir Hammond.
Lawyers of the Assin North Constituency believe that the comments made by KT Hammond are highly prejudicial and violate Mr Gyakye Quayson’s right to a fair trial.
In the writ, Counsel Justin Pwavra Teriwajah stated that the Minister of Trade and Industry is brazenly usurping the function of the trial judge and that the Court has the power to commit KT Hammond for contempt.
They are demanding that he be brought before the court to be tried for contempt of court and sentenced to prison if found guilty.
Mr Hammond in a widely circulated video said Mr Quayson will ‘surely be jailed’ after his criminal trial.
The embattled NDC MP is currently standing trial for perjury after it emerged that he had filed his nomination for the 2020 elections despite holding dual citizenship.
But to lawyer Amaliba, who was speaking in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie', the Adansi Asokwa MP's comment was ‘needless’.
"He [James Gyakye Quayson] wants K.T Hammond jailed but it’s up to the judge to decide,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye.

You could also have sent Mahama and Nana Addo to court because what they said is not different from what KT Hammond said.
Having Amaliba still as leader of NDC legal indicates the kinds of jockers NDC party is made up of.
No wonder these lawyers are ***barred word*** of the brilliant attorney general Odame. You don’t want an offence committed mp to be jailed because his constituents will be deprived of a representative but you want another mp to be behind the bars. Double standards. These people are consistent with their inconsistencies.
Eii, NDC people are funny. Look at what Tsikata is doing to delay the case and let Ghanaian taxpayers pay the bill because there are loopholes in our laws. These delays cost a lot of money. Just imagine how much Opuni's case has cost Ghanaian taxpayers so far? The same loopholes are being used to delay Gyakye Quayson's case. These loopholes so be closed to enable us move corruption trials to speedy conclusions. It is sad that influential and rich people get things easy and the poor suffers.
Oh wow what a disingenuous bunch of people. So you don't want the one who has flouted the law to be jailed but wants another to be jailed. What a bunch of dishonest people. If KT Hammond should be jailed , How much more Mr G Quayson.
Am glad this coming from Amaliba. So this the worth of what so called MPs are abandoning parliament for? Waow
You don’t want Quayson to be jailed you want somebody else to be jailed; your nose like Wawa board
