Atik Mohammed says the rotation of Ghana's Independence Day celebration across the Regions is a "waste of money".
Ghana on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 celebrated her 67th independence held in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
The event was attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and their wives, Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, President of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara and a host of dignitaries.
Discussing the independence celebration during Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, Atik noted that the rotation drains the nation financially, claiming this expenditure is very unnecessary.
"It involves a lot of money which, in my view...I feel it's unnecessary," he remarked, adding "we can still do the rotation in a manner that is not costly if we focus on the core reason for the celebration".
"The independence celebration needs to remind us of our history, how far we have come, where we are today and where we ought to go but we spend a lot of time doing a lot of other things that unnecessary, and these are things that come with cost . . . a day like the Independence Day should be one of the days we remind ourselves to be patriotic and patriotism doesn't just come in having jamborees and fanfares", he further said.

@Abdul Razak, you have made my day. Can I also, “talk is cheap”. The airports in Ho and Tamale, even the Kumasi airport are they economically viable to build those airports? Rotating the Independence Day among the regions is part of making every person in our dear feel part of it. It’s also part of building a national cohesion.
LIKE PREZ KUFFOUR SAID GHANAIANS KNOW THE COST OF EVERYTHING AND THE VALUE OF NOTHING, EVERYTHING IS NOT ABOUT MONEY
@anewghana, for the 60 good years the celebration has been held in Accra, have those monies you are talking about been used to solve the problem listed in your comment?
@Musa, good idea? Have you asked yourself, how much it cost to transport all those military hardware from region to region? Those money could have been used to repair the school building that killed a student at Shama. Pregnant mothers sleep on floor in the hospitals, school feeding collapsing (or collapsed), pupils having no furniture to sit on at school, our roads are in deplorable condition, lights out on our 67th birthday (at Apam). As Ghanaians let us eschew this cancerous npp and ndc and build a country for ALL. WE NEED A CHANGE FROM THESE TWO ***barred word***, GOOD FOR NOTHING, BLOOD SUCKING, NATION WRECKER parties.
This rotating is a good idea at least every region will have a fill of the day
