Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, has expressed gratitude to organizers of the SWAG Awards for adjudging him the "Association President of the Year".

Herbert Mensah was honoured at the 43rd MTN SWAG Awards Night, held last week.

He was rewarded for making sports, especially Rugby, popular in Ghana and motivating players and officials to deliver their best in the development of sports in the country.

Thanking the Board and organizers of the SWAG Awards, the Rugby President did not fail to appreciate the efforts of all who contributed to the Rugby success story in the country.

“…in accepting the trophy, I do it on behalf everybody and I’d expect that somebody else will win it. They will be doing it on behalf of all of us so that we work together in momentum to a point in time that the governments won’t talk about getting support but actually do give support. Not only support but they give their respect and the way they behave and the way they refer to us, and in their planning or infrastructure needs across the nation and support even as smaller or little levels. Thank you. Thank you again and for all Presidents, be proud!”, he said.

Mr Herbert Mensah spearheaded the team to qualify to the World Series after winning the West Africa competition and proceeding to the African Championship.

On 10 May 2017, the World Rugby Council approved the application by the Ghana Rugby Football Union as a full member union, bringing the total number to 104 full members and 17 associates.

He has also led the Rugby team known as the Ghana Eagles to lift the bronze and it's ranked number one based on the Pool results.

Other achievements that the team has made under the Presidency of Herbert Mensah are that they are winners of Rugby Africa Regional Challenge and were also awarded the hosting rights for the 2017 Rugby Africa Regional Challenge.

Herbert Mensah further noted that his award should be a wake-up call for the government to support the team and other sporting activities.

When we win these awards as we have today, it’s not for us. We’re winning it for all the minor acts in sports because there are Presidents right away through, colleagues of mine at the GOC who are going through difficult times in terms of raising money, recognition, support. Sometimes, like us getting the Ghana Education System to at least put us as part of the curricula which makes the development a lot easier. I know and feel what they’re going through…," he stated.
