Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has opened up about his decision to sign for Indonesian Liga 1 giants, Persib Bandung.
The 34-year-old free agent joined Persib on a one-year deal, ending a his stint on the sidelines since he departed Greek giants Panathinaikos in September 2016.
According to Essien his decision was motivated by the rich history of Persib as well as their quest to dominate Indonesian football.
"Well, the nice things they told me about the club and how great is the club and how powerful it is and the fans and everything," Essien told Persib TV after his official unveiling today.
"The project the club will...you know will take the club to the next level, that is why I make my decision."
The former Cheslea midfielder added that he was hopeful his move to Persib will kickstart a trend which will see more world class players moving to Indonesia.
"I wish I could be the start of world players grazing pitches in Indonesia. Hopefully this is a good beginning for Indonesia and Persib football," said Essien.
"Thank you for bringing me here. I'm excited and want to give my best."
