Lionel Messi has now scored over 40 goals in 10 consecutive calendar years after he bagged Barcelona's equaliser during their 1-1 draw with Valencia on Sunday.

The Argentinian has scored 41 goals so far in 2018, his 10th consecutive year of scoring more than 40 goals for club and country.

He scored his sixth goal in La Liga this season over the weekend as he saved Barcelona from defeat once more.

Messi also grabbed a brace against Tottenham last week, during Barcelona's 4-2 win in the Champions League at Wembley as he put in a masterclass performance.

He continues to prove himself as one of the best to have played the game, year after year.

The 31-year-old has 41 goals this year, but still has the majority of October, as well as November and December to add to that.

However, if he does score more in 2018, it will not be for Argentina.

Messi was not called up for his country's upcoming friendlies, after telling the interim coach Lionel Scaloni he needs more time to think about his future.

Messi's 10-year run of scoring more than 40 goals started in 2009 when he scored a total of 41 goals as a 22-year-old just starting to cement himself as one of the best on the planet.

The Barcelona forward has regularly exceeded the 50 goal mark during that period and in one year, 2012, scored an outstanding 91 goals.
