The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released guidelines for the resitting of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) by private candidates. According to the council, the examination is open to those writing for the first time and resitters. Registration for the examination will begin on September 1, 2014. This will be online and the biometric data of candidates would be captured as part of the process. The examination will be conducted from February 16 to 20, 2015 and the timetable will be made available online when it is ready. The results are expected to be released in May 2015. Resitters and first-time sitters The council said resitters must provide their index numbers and the year they wrote the previous BECE, while a person writing for the first time must be 18 years and above. Students in Junior High School (JHS) are not qualified to register for the examination. �The date of birth of candidates would be printed on their certificates. Unqualified candidates caught taking the examination will have their registration nullified and be barred from taking any WAEC examination for two years,� the council said. Number of subjects On the number of subjects to be written, the council said the candidates could sit for any number of subjects; from one to nine, comprising English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), French, Building Design and Technology, Ghanaian Language and Religious and Moral Education. Examination centres Each district capital would have one examination centre provided the candidates in that district are 200 or more. In cases where the candidates for the examination are less than 200, the centre will be moved to the nearest centre/district to make the conduct of the examination viable. Assessment of candidates The council also said Continuous Assessment Scores will not be required for this examination and that grading of candidates would be based solely on their final examination scores, as is done for the private candidates in the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Syllabus For the syllabus, the council said a handbook containing the syllabuses, scheme of examination, specimen questions and rules and regulations for the examination was being prepared in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and would be published soon for the guidance of prospective candidates. Copies would be made available online for candidates to copy. Fees The council also stated that, �The examination is private, therefore, candidates will be required to pay for the full cost.
