PHOTO: Killer Mum Nabbed, Slays 3-Week-Old Baby

A 29-year-old single mother, Beatrice Glakpe, has been arrested by the Dansoman District Police Command for her alleged involvement in the death of her three-week-old baby girl. The suspect, a native of Akatsi in the Volta Region and a resident of Glefe, near Panbros Salt Limited, was arrested on April 3, 2012 by the police monitor crew 5 upon a tip-off from neighbours in the Glefe community. The three-week baby girl was retrieved from a huge refuse dump with both arms and limbs severed off and wrapped in a cloth soaked with blood. The almost decomposed body of the baby was deposited at the Police Hospitals Mortuary for autopsy. Beatrice is currently in the custody of Dansoman Police Station. Briefing the media yesterday, the Dansoman District Commander, DSP Susana Adjei, explained that suspect Beatrice was a single mother of one and was pregnant for one Richard- a mechanic. She is also in court with the father of a first child over child support. Beatrice sold boiled eggs to support herself and her child since Richard absconded after putting her in the family way. Three weeks ago, she delivered herself of a bouncing baby girl in her residence at Glefe. The beauty of the baby girl, according to the police boss, attracted a lot of sympathizers who donated largely baby clothing and other items toward the care of the baby. On Sunday April 1, 2012, residents said they heard the baby crying at dawn as though she was in danger but when Beatrice was quizzed about what was wrong, she retorted, The baby likes food too much! Thinking it was just about food, her inquisitive neighbours returned to bed as the day was yet to break. After that incident, Beatrice neighbours claimed they never heard or saw the baby again, raising suspicions of a possible murder or abandonment. They therefore reported the matter to the police when news broke that a baby had been found without its hands and limbs on a refuse dump nearby. The Dansoman Police, led by the Commander, visited the scene and retrieved the body from the dumping site. The only remains of the baby, according to DSP Susana Adjei, were her head and trunk as its thighs and legs as well as hands were missing. During interrogation, Beatrice told the police that the baby died on Saturday March 31, 2012. However, she could not take the baby to the hospital because she had no money. The suspect has since identified the body and confessed dumping it on the refuse dump after the baby passed away but insisted she did not sever off the missing parts.
