Mum Burns Daughters Textbooks, Clothes

A 34-year-old mother, Aisha Amadu, has burnt her daughters clothes and textbooks for ignoring her warnings not to attend pre-Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) classes. The suspect lives with the victim, her there other children and the step-father of the victim at Mandela Road at Prampram in the Ningo-Prampram Constituency of the Greater Accra Region. The 17-year-old victim (name withheld) is in her final year at the Prampram B/A Basic B Junior High School. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rebecca Nyamah, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) coordinator of the Tema Regional Police, at about 3:00pm last Thursday, the Prampram DOVVSU got information that Aisha Amadu had destroyed her daughters textbooks. Two officers from the unit were quickly dispatched to the suspects residence. However, by the time they arrived at the scene, the suspect had finished damaging her daughters clothes, she narrated. The only items of the victim the other tenants could salvage from the fire were two novels, a Holy Bible and mathematic textbook,, DSP Nyamah said. When arrested and interrogated, Aisha Amadu admitted destroying her daughters textbooks because the victim attended pre-BECE classes and closed at 7:00pm, a situation she (Aisha) could not cope with because she could not single-handedly cook for the victim while the victim stayed in the classroom to study, DSP Nyamha said. Aisha said her daughter ignored her constant warnings and to worsen matters, the daughter relocated to a classmates house to continue preparing for the BECE, DSP Nyamah narrated. According to DSP Nyamah, the suspect rejected pleas from the victims head teacher, teachers and residents, insisting that she would destroy the girls properties and then send her away to her biological father at Afram Plains before the BECE. The suspect told The Finder when she appeared before DSP Nyamah that she indeed burnt her daughters clothes, explaining that the daughter had been stealing her money, adding that she is making my marital home uncomfortable for me. This girl here is my daughter and I know what she can do. I will ensure that she goes to her biological father so I can have peace in my marital home, she said. Aisha Amadu, according to DSP Nyamah, was granted bail the same day she was arrested because she was a nursing mother. She however, assured that the suspect would be processed for court. Appealing for financial support and clothes from the general public, DSP Nyamah pointed out that the victim would be putting up with DOVVSU personnel while she prepared to write her BECE. The victim, DOVVSU gathered, is indebted to the tune of GH30 being arrears of BECE registration and studies fees. The suspect failed to pay the fees so the step-father had to raise GH25 as part payment for the fees, the DOVVSU Coordinator explained.
