Fishmonger Sells Decomposed Fish

The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) on Friday, arrested a 44-year-old fishmonger allegedly noted for buying decomposed fish and processing them for sale. The fishmonger, Madam Gladys Mbiah, also known s Akua Gyenua, had both huge quantities of decomposed varieties of fish and loaded them onto two Kia trucks to Apemanim Kokoben, in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District of Ashanti, to smoke them for sale. Before her arrest, s he had smoked a large quantity of the rotten fish for sale at the Kumasi market, buy she told officials of the FDB that she bought them very cheap and was packaging them for pigs. Reports indicated that the smell of the rotten fish was all over the Apemanim Kokoben community. Following a tip-off, a team of FDB officials and journalists went to the community and found the woman storing a large quantity of the rotten fish in a compartment of a kitchen, while processing some. Officials of the FDB collected the rest, including the smoked ones and also seized a large quantity of the putrefied fish from her source of supply, Adom Mbroso Cold Store, at the Asafo Market in Kumasi. She is alleged to have entered into a deal with the cold store to supply her with the rotten fish at a very low price. When she was taken to the police Buffalo Unit in Kumasi, she caused a stir at the office, sensing that she might be detained overnight. She suddenly fell and started rolling on the floor, yelling amid incantations. Then, she covered herself with a cloth while shivering and told the police that she was suffering from high blood pressure and that she needed to attend to nature�s call, all it eh presence of newsmen. Some of her relatives pleaded with the police to allow her to be sent home for her to report the following day, but the police rather took her to the Military Regimental Service (MRS) Hospital for treatment.
