Bakatue Festival Cancelled

This years Bakatue festival, which is celebrated by the chiefs and people of Edina Traditional Area in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region, has been cancelled. Bakatue, which is one of the main festivals in the country, was cancelled by the Elmina Traditional Council to allow it to prepare for next years celebration. At a press conference organized by the traditional council at Elmina on Tuesday, the chiefs stated that the festival had to be cancelled because some rituals which needed to be performed before the festival had not been done. The spokesperson for the chiefs, who is also the chief of Atonkwa, Nana Kojo Aduakwa V, said the traditional council did not have enough time to perform the rituals on the scheduled date. We did not have the consensus to do those rituals hence the need to cancel it, the spokesperson stated. He indicated that the rituals included Krubabutuw, bringing the Benya from the Benya Lagoon to the shrine and its attendant rituals and ceremonies as well as the first and second Dombo. He apologized to the people of Elmina as well as Ghanaians who had the intention to celebrate the festival with them this year for any inconvenience caused them. Daily Guide observed at the press conference that all the chiefs were wearing black cloths, indicating their seriousness about the issue. Bakatue festival, which is celebrated annually, has been drawing people from all walks of life due to the rich culture during the period.
