NUGS Congress Marred By Violence...All Executivs Suspended

All national executive officers of the National Union of Ghana Students, NUGS have been suspended. The 46th Annual congress of the union at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology came to an abrupt end when chaos broke out prior to the election on Sunday. The Congress has been suspended till further notice. A seven-member committee made up of SRC and local NUGS representatives of the various Universities has since taken charge of the union. Local NUGs representative and SRC President of the University of Ghana Edmund Kombat in an interview with XYZ News said the committee will soon announce a new date for the congress. Earlier, a car alleged to belong to the General Secretary of the union was found with about three brand new cutlasses in it. This got a section of the participants at the congress really worked up as they tried to seize the car and its contents. It degenerated into a struggle during which the police came around to take the vehicle and its contents away. The immediate past SRC president of the University of Cape Coast, Kwasi Addai Mununkum Otchere, later explained they were arguing over how the election would be held in the night while there is no backup power supply. According to him, the elections were supposed to have been held on Saturday and not Sunday and the same time, there was an ongoing issue regarding the delegates list which was to be used in voting. Macho men were cited at the grounds, a situation that compel the Police and military to try and salvage the situation.
