FFC Submits Interim Report On Operations Of GWCL/GUWL To PURC

A fact finding committee (FFC) set up by the PURC in October 2012 to assess and determine the root causes of operational problems at the water supply facilities of the Ghana Water Company Limited and Ghana Urban Water Limited in Accra Tema in particular and Sekondi Takoradi, Kumasi and Dalum, have submitted it interim findings and recommendations to the commission in Accra. The 6-member FFC chaired by Mr. Jonathan Nunoo former MD of GWCL observed among other things that pollution of water bodies in the regions is one of the major challenges affecting the operations of the GWCL. Other challenges affecting operations of the GWCL at the treatment facilities include inadequate security, malfunctioning of some indicators that lead to fault detection, the need for regular supply of chemicals for water treatment, irregular supply of electricity, poorly equipped laboratories in some cases and poor co-ordination among staff. The Executive Secretary of the PURC Engineer Samuel Sarpong said the commission is seriously monitoring the operations of GWCL to ensure that investments made in the water sector lead to quality service for consumers.
