Ashanti Regional Police PRO: Kumasi Shooting Spree Alarm Was False

The Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer(PRO), ASP Yusif Tanko, has indicated that 70 out of the 150 armed robbers who were arrested on Wednesday have been arraigned before court. The police arrested 150 suspected robbers in a swoop intended to bring the spate of armed robbery in the Kumasi metropolis and its environs to the barest minimum. The suspects were arrested from the abandoned affordable housing units at Ayigya, which has now become a den for hardened criminals. The police destroyed shrines which is alleged to be protecting the robbers against police arrest and also retrieved thirty-nine assorted passports, 16 rubber stamps, three locally manufactured pistols, three live cartridges, 97 pliers, nine female slippers, four scissors, six sharp machetes a lap top computer and GH3,816.00. Speaking in an interview on Thursdays edition of Peace FMs morning show Kokrokoo, ASP Yusif Tanko disclosed that; so far 70 of the armed robbers have been taken to court and they have been remanded to allow further investigations. According to him, they will be organising an identification parade for complainants to identify their attackers. Reports were rife following police arrest that the rest of the armed robbers who were not satisfied with the police action started engaging in a shooting spree to scare off the police as well as residents in Kejetia and its environs. However, speaking to the issue, ASP Tanko described them as false reports. According to him, when they had the information, a dispatch team was sent to the place and nothing of that sort was happening. We were not able to establish that because when the news got to us we dispatched the patrol team there and they brought report that the reports being made about gunshots in Kejetia and its surroundings were false," ASP Tanko stated.
