A faulty air-conditioner in an office at the Information and Technology (IT) Department of the Electoral Commission (EC) was Friday afternoon gutted by fire.
The fire was, however, extinguished by staff of the department before the arrival of fire personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service.
At the time reporters from Graphic Online got to the scene at about 1:15pm the fire had already been put out in the office, located on the ground floor of the department.
At the EC headquarters were two fire tenders, personnel from the GNFS as well as some police personnel to ensure law and order. There was a huge media presence following earlier reports by some media houses that the EC building was on fire.
The Public Relations Officer of the EC, Sylvia Annor, told the media that the situation had been put under control. �The fire outbreak was due to a faulty airconditioner. We have it under control and we were able to put it out before the arrival of the fire service,� she said.
The Accra Metro Station Officer of the GNFS, Solomon Lartey, said they had a call from the Control Room of a fire at the EC �but before we came it had been put off�.
