Public Asked To Consider Traffic Offenders As Enemies

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Joseph Oppong, Upper West Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, has asked Ghanaians to consider drivers who disobey traffic regulations as enemies of society. He appealed to the public to help the police to arrest such offenders, to ensure safety on the road. DSP Oppong gave the advice at a road safety awareness campaign, organised by the Regional branch of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in collaboration with the MTTU and the Road Safety Management Services Limited, in Wa on Tuesday. The event sought to sensitize drivers and motorists on the need to prevent road accidents, particularly during the Easter festivity. According to DSP Oppong, last year, the region recorded three accidents involving three commercial vehicles and two motor bikes during Easter, resulting in three deaths and nine injuries. He asked Ghanaians to support the MTTU to prevent accidents since road safety is a shared responsibility. Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Samad, Upper West Regional Director of the NRSC, noted that road accidents increase during festivities, and advised drivers and motorists to obey traffic regulations to avoid carnage on the roads. He asked motorists to wear crash helmet whilst riding to save their lives during accidents. Mr. Baana Mahamud, Upper West Regional Coordinator of the National Road Safety Management Services Limited, said about 2000 people die annual through road accidents and out of the number, about 23 per cent were those selling by the road side. Mr. Nuhu Mahama, the Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Unit, appealed to the drivers to rest sufficiently when embarking on long journeys, to prevent fatigue which could result in accidents.
