Information reaching peacefmonline.com has it that about 17 illegal miners popularly known as galamsey operators are dead after a mine collapsed at Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region.
According to Peace FM�s Central Regional Correspondent, Teacher Korsa, the 17 were made up of 2 women and 15 men who were trying to dig up gold from an already dug pit described as a �death zone�.
The pit is reported to have been dug by a group of Chinese miners but left uncovered after completing their operations.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are at the scene trying to rescue more people.
At about 5pm Monday, 4 more people were rescued and have been admitted at the Dunkwa-On-Offin hospital. According to our reporter, the 4 were the only survivors.
So far those who have been identified are Kofi Amankwah, Kojo Afful, Papa Abroso, Sister Ama, Clement Abukir, Kwame Appiah, Uncle Yaw and Atta Panyin.
The rest are Shettu, Kobina Abanga, Brother Kweku, Kwesi and Kwesi Kow.
The dead bodies that were retrieved have been deposited at the morgue of Dunkwa-On-Offin Hospital.
